kitchen lighting plan

16 years ago

Hello all,

I posted this on the lighting forum, but it gets less traffic and I know there are many smart people here that can very likely help me!

I feel completely out of my element with my lighting plan for our kitchen reno. I've attached my draft plan. Our house is old (1929) with no airconditioning so we are planning ceiling fans/lights in both the kitchen and the nook even though the wall will be opened a bit between them. The kitchen is gutted so we can do what we need to do, the nook however has an arched ceiling so we will just replace the fixture that is there. Does this seem like enough light? We are hoping once the wall opens up a bit, there will be more light from the nook coming into the kitchn. Option in the future to change the exterior door to one with a larger window. Electrician is supposedly roughing this in on Wednesday so any advice you can provide before then would be wonderful. Yup, just a little stressed, no worries!

    From your diagram, it appears that your recessed fixtures are above the 'walking' areas. When my husband & electrician were installing ours, they put them above the counters (closer to the wall cabinets) so a shadow would not cast on my work surface.

    I would consider adding a recessed light above the dishwasher.

    I agree with cienza that your recessed lights should be closer to the cabinets to avoid shadows on your counters. Otherwise, you will almost be required to use your undercab lights all the time. Another can or a pendant over your peninsula would be nice. Finally, do you have a light on your hood? If not, I'd like more light over the stove.

    You didn't ask for other feedback on your layout, but if it's not too late in your remodel, you might want to consider moving your peninsula over next to the stove. Having the additional prep area close to the stove makes more sense and it would protect the cook from the traffic flow.

    Thanks everyone, I appreciate your feedback. I'm thinking that the electrician and contractor will know where to really put the cans! (god I hope!) Too late for any changes to the floor plan but still appreciate your comments. It's actually an existing doorway that is being widened a bit, with an opening into the wall for the peninsula. I thought the same as you, holligator, but my cabinet person said, and I agreed, that having the opening in the middle of the wall would cause problems with the eating area (the table is much bigger than shown and will move towards the window).
    And thanks again. I got what is probably excellent advice in the lighting forum but it might as well have been written in Italian for all the words I understood!

    Having just done my lighting plan a week ago, I agree that the cans should go closer to the counters. They do appear to far out into the center of your room.

    So what about this:
    * move the can by the stove closer and add another one on the other side
    * add a can over the peninsula/DW
    * consider eliminating light from fan - starts to seem excessive!
    * do the other two cans stay in the pathway to light said pathway and pantry? the space on the other side of the fridge is a landing spot & shelves, not a work space.

    thx again everyone
