Range help needed!

My kitchen plans have changed and I need to order my appliances asap. All along, I planned on having a cooktop and double ovens. After meeting with a designer since my kitchen is so quirky, she suggested I get a range instead. I would love two ovens, but don't know if that will work financially.

My questions is, if you had less than 6K to spend, what range would you get??? Would love a 48" with two ovens, but wow!, the prices are too high. What would you do to stay under 6K?

THANKS to everyone who can help!

What I got was a 30 inch Blue Star gas range and a Miele Chef Speed Oven. The two together were just slightly more than 6K. This way I have a big convection gas oven plus, a 24 inch wide electric / microwave / speed oven installed under counter. I like them both very much. Many people want a 36 or 48 inch range but 30 was truly big enough for me. I like having the small oven for every day. I also have the Breville and between that and the Miele I rarely use the gas oven. It is very nice to have a couple of smaller ovens that can be used for different things.

I started where you are thinking I needed a cooktop and double ovens, but for many reasons, budget not being the least of them, ended up with a range. I got a 36" Capital Culinarian. Like Sayde, I also have a Breville oven that I use frequently, if I don't feel like turning on the big oven. BTW, I have not regretted not having the double ovens yet. Good luck with your choices.

In addition to being costly a 48" range is a bear to fit into quirky kitchens simply because of its size. I have one I bought many years ago and I often wish it wasn't so big!

That said I do love having two ovens, but I could probably be happy with a range-oven and another one like the Miele, etc. If my range should die, that's what I'd choose rather than replacing it. You could also get some of the benefits of a dual-fuel range without the cost of that set up simply by having an all-gas range and an electric wall oven.

The only teensy down side is that a range with two ovens has both of them under the vent fan. Wall ovens apparently don't have vent fans.

I would get one of the following. Either...

    (1) A 48" Bertazzoni double-oven range ($6099), or

    (2) A 30" Bertazzoni Master gas range ($2300) and a 24" Bertazzoni electric wall oven ($899!!!!). So you get the best of both worlds--gas and electric--for not even $3200, barely half your budget!

    Or of course...

    (3) A 30" Bertazzoni Professional gas range (about $2800-$3800, depending on color) or Bertazzoni Heritage ($4800-$4900) and that $899 wall oven or whatever other one you could afford. This way, you can get a range that's a neat color. :-)

    Here's a link to the 30" Berta:

And the 24" Berta wall oven:

With the range/wall oven combo, the ovens would of course be bigger than what you would get on a 48"double-oven range (30" + 24" = 54").

If you actually WANT to spend close to the top of your budget, you could of course get a 30" Berta electric wall oven for $2200-$2800, depending on the model. With the $2300 Berta gas range, you're at around $4500-$5200 total. Or of course you could get an electric wall oven by a different maker, like Miele or Thermador or Bosch. Either way, with a $2300 Berta gas range, you can still very easily stay under your $6000 target.

Personally I would pick some version of option (2) or option (3), i.e. a 30" Berta range and whatever wall oven I wanted. But I just wanted to point out the 48" double oven range that's pretty close to your price point.

Perhaps an Aga Legacy, at 36" or 44"?

I'm another who had wanted two ovens, but not enough to make the layout sacrifices that would have been necessary to fit them in. I ended up with one large oven in a 36" range, and a Breville for all small/quick baking needs. At $250 it's far and away the most expensive toaster I've ever purchased. However, beyond making fine toast, it really and truly works for actual baking.

Here's one of the first things I baked in it, back during our remodel, from Trailrunner's challah recipe. (Of course, only one loaf would fit at a time.)

Like Sayde I went with the 30" range and an undercounter Miele speed oven. Except I went with the Culinarian rather than the Bluestar (and no I do not want to start THAT debate all over again - plenty of that over on Appliances:)) We have an old house and our new kitchen, while double the size of the old one, is still not big. Double ovens would have killed our counter space. I figure that we will almost never need two full-sized ovens going at once, and this way we won't sacrifice any space for an additional microwave either.

    Good luck with your decision.
