another try at rug

I'm liking this one. Non-directional, muted colors, sort of tribal...a little something from everyone's comments on my last thread...

Wall color and tapestry upholstery are planned to change, and those are temporary (for 2 years now!) window coverings too.

It's from Home Decorators, so quality is unknown, construction method is not mentioned but it's wool, 8x10 is $700, not available in that size until 4/30.

What do you think?

What will you change your wall color to? It's a pretty rug, but I think it's too similar to your wall color, and would prefer to see a contrast.

Not sure about the wall color but something darker that doesn't contrast so much with the woodwork.

It looks like a Safavieh rug to me -- look at their web site and see if you recognize the rug there. I have a Safavieh rug in my dining room and I think it is very good quality.

Wow, sueb20, good eye! Here it is. The text description is word-for-word w/Home Decorators too. I'm glad to hear it's a good rug!

Your rug is a hand-tufted Safavieh that was constructed in China. I've always liked the pattern of that line.

I ordered a hand-knotted rug from Homedecorators.com that was also a Safavieh. They are supposed to be a good rug manufacturer but the one they sent me had some problems. HD was great to work with and made sure I had a free pick-up of my return (only because there were problems with my rug).

I also wonder if Safavieh treats their China rugs differently than those made in other locales. Mine had an odor. That's highly unusual for a hand-knot but not a hand-tuft.

    Cross-posting I guess. :)

    Sorry

Thanks for the input parma. I see a couple of local dealers, I could check prices and smell there.

You guys are amazing, I post one rug out of the millions out there, and I get 2 correct IDs within minutes! :)

My "chicken runner" that I recently ordered for my kitchen is a Safavieh hand-knotted, and the quality is excellent. (No stinkies, either, thank goodness! ;-))

Also, Frontgate.com carries a large supply of Safavieh Anatolias. Don't know if you've signed up there but they have 20% sales often and they also give you a 30 day trial on the rug with free returns.

    Have fun...I just love rugs.

Another place to look: I ordered my Safavieh from selectrugs.com, and was very pleased with their service, pricing, and free shipping. They're having some sales right now too.

Thanks parma and auntjen. HD still has the best price of anywhere I've seen this tonight. I don't see that particular Safavieh rug at selectrugs.

Ok, so no problem finding this rug...but what does everyone think about it in the room?

I love that style and think it works with your room.

It's a beautiful carpet but in your room I would want to see something with more color, perhaps a rust background, something that would add a bit of drama. Your room is beautiful and timeless, and I think a rug with more color would make it look sensational. There were several in that same rug collection that had more color which I think would work beautifully.

One more bit of info: I got my Safavieh at decorarugs.com. And -- no smell. Also, in my limited experience, I would say that these rugs are a little more vibrant in person than they show online. I actually think it would look nice in your room.

Overstock had this rug in every size a few months ago. I ordered it as a runner, but sent it back for a hand-knotted rug with fringe. Stock changes frequently so check often if you can wait a bit. Also search their site for similar styles. One important caveat wherever you buy: be sure to read the descriptions and reviews carefully before ordering, and I'd be leery of lead content.

If you're open to a more vibrant rug, this would anchor your room beautifully:

Obviously I like the Safavieh, but I don't think it has enough visual weight to balance your woodwork and furniture . Good luck!

Oh, I agree, a rust color would look lovely in the space. Maybe if you don't want to do it in a rug, you could add more accents. I'm so drawn to that pillow color!

You're getting there. Unfortunately, I have trouble distinguising between alternate good choices. I usually end up taking a risk, or settling, but not for $700.

Having a beautiful surrounding is all about distguishing between the good choices, so keep asking the people here, who know.

    The one comment I have...

That rug is largely about the background color and reads as pretty much one color. For a traditional home with good proportions and a close-to-solid-wood-tone-family color rug, I'd like to see walls in a totally different color family than the basic rug color. That would exclude tans.

I'm not sure what is meant by muted (does this refer to color or design?), but I kind of like a rug that a balance of colors, some of which address the dark woodwork, and don't blend in with the floor as much.

Don't you just love this process?

Abundant's link to the Overstock rug showed a customer rating it with 5 stars. That's good! She said that it brightened her whole room and was all she could ask for.

I love it when there's a good buyer feedback.

As for color...it's all about the look that you're trying to achieve. I like brighter rugs and the more subdued ones.

Thanks, parma and sueb. I've ordered it from a local dealer to give it a test run. His price is a little higher, but I figure it's worth it for ease of pickup and return if it doesn't work.

ingrid and htnspz, the 2 rugs I've sampled already were quite vibrant and it was too much drama. This may be a swing too far in the other direction, but I'm curious to see what it will look like in person as opposed to a picture. I mocked up some of the other rugs in that line, but didn't see anything that I liked better. I'm hoping, as sueb says, this is a bit more vibrant in real life. I asked the rug dealer on the phone about the colors, and he said the red is a rusty red. I'm not sure I will like that. I had rust-colored carpet in my bedroom circa 1980 and I don't think I want to re-live that. :)

abundantblessings, I looked at overstock but they don't have the size I need at the moment. I'm still amazed at how many of you guys are familiar with this rug! I like the black one you posted the link for, but I'm afraid of bringing any more black into the room. It already feels quite masculine to me, and I think a predominantly black rug would push it over the testosterone brink. I hear what you're saying about the visual weight though.

jamies, the more I think about the way this rug blends into the floor, the more I actually like it. My complaint with the room right now is that it is so full of contrast. The floor is light, the baseboard is dark, the wall is light, the window trim is dark. I want to minimize the back and forth contrast, at least a bit. As I said before, going with a rug this light may be a swing too far in the no-drama direction, but I think it's worth a try. I haven't given too much thought to the wall color because I knew I needed to find a rug first, but I was thinking of a light-to-medium olive green, something that would blend better with the woodwork. But I'm open on the wall color, and I see what you're saying about not using the same color as the rug.

Thanks again everyone for helping me work through this. And no, jamies, I do not love this. I am SO not a shopper! :)

I think you are probably looking for an age-worn, timeless, warm, soothing look. (Which personally I think would be great!) And that's why the contrast is not working for you. I think perhaps you ought to go to Homegoods, Tuesday Morning or somewhere and look at the rugs in person. If you can find a warm, golden rug, bring it home and test it out. Even if it doesn't end up being THE rug for that room, you'll have a better idea of the 'look' -whether or not you like the overall feel from a rug that is similar to the wall color. Can you get a sample of the wall paint? If so, take that with you. I don't think it's critical to get a true match, just a similar family -you don't want a green-golden with a red-golden I wouldn't think. Love you room, and love the look I think you are going for. I think the constrast of the woodwork is plenty of contrast for the room and shows off a beautiful feature.

I think I might have told you this before but I have a very similar room, same trim, same wall color. I love the contrast. I am planning to paint the dining room version a pale green or blue. I think the rug could look great if it works with your floors. I don't think that rug would work against my brassy wood floors. If it doesn't work, you might try a green, darker or lighter than the color you want for the walls. I agree that a warm red would look nice too. I would love to see a picture when you get it finalized.

I think you are probably looking for an age-worn, timeless, warm, soothing look.

bestyears, that is exactly it. If the Safavieh (the guy at the rug store said that's pronounced like mama mia) doesn't work, I will try what you suggest. I didn't expect this to be so much leg-work!

Diane, I would love to see a pic of your room if you're willing to share. Is your furniture lighter, by chance? Do you have a rug in your living room? If so, what kind of colors? If you'd like to see my room finished, check back in about 5 years. ;) (Seriously, I will post finals pics if this room is ever finished. Everyone here has been so helpful working through the elements so far.)

yayagal, thank you for that link. I see one picture there that I had already tried on, so to speak. It didn't look quite right, but hard to know for sure from digital images from different sources. We'll see how this progresses. It would be great to find one on sale!

I think something in a more contrasting color would look better. This one matches too perfectly with the walls and blends in (unless that's what you want).

Very nice rug! I think it'll look great.

You mentioned an olive green wall color and if you were to choose something along those lines then the rug you've chosen just might be the right one for the reasons you've listed. With the wall color you have now it was difficult to get excited about a rug that was mostly beige but the whole concept changes with a different wall color. Perhaps it would be easier if you painted the walls first?
