Please help with dining room

Hi,

I am normally a lurker here but I need some input on my dining room. Do you think that I should flank either side of my painting with something, if so any ideas? We just finished painting today and are trying to finish the room. I also want a new chandelier but may wait until after the holidays to buy it. If anyone has any other suggestions let me know. Thanks

Here are the two chandeliers that I was thinking about.

duffy, I love the vacuum cleaner in the forefront! My kind of house. (Also, love the dog's tail peeking out.)

Your painting is beautiful. Perhaps some sconces that complement your chandelier (I personally like the darker, oil rubbed bronze one) would help highlight it.

We just moved into our house November 7 and my husband is constantly taking pics and sending them out to our family and friends. It helps me see where my problem areas are (decorating) and where I need to dust!!!

What if you broke up the four botanicals (? - can't tell what the subject matter is) on the other wall and hung them in 2's flanking the painting. The green in the mats pick up on the green in the painting. The frameless painting by itself seem unfinished but the other framed pieces would anchor it.

What's on the wall opposite the painting? Could you put your mirror there - nicely reflecting your artwork and do ORB sconces on either side of the mirror?

Actually, (You can start hating me now, 'cause people who want you to do something ELSE instead of what you are asking about, are Sooooooo Annoying!) I think that the painting should stand alone on that wall. I'm more of a landscape girl myself, and that one is pretty modern, but it seems to me that it makes it's own kind of statement. Also, I can't really think of anything that would complement it without detracting from it, you know?
So, what do you do with all that blank wall space around it? Well, here's where I take you off the deep end. What I think you need are different drapes! OR.......a different rug. Not both necessarily. Why?? Because the bright and vivid colors of your painting are kind of flat against the neutral wall color. I think you need to bring out some of the colors in the art elsewhere in the room. Either the rug or the drapes might carry that out with some of the reds and golden tones of the art.

    OK. I'm done.

    Wodka,
I was laughing to myself about the vaccuum and also the random piece of paper on the floor; our house is lived in as they say;) I was looking at this sconce as a possibility it is hard to tell the true color online.
    Rucnmom,
I have been meaning to get a frame for the painting I agree about it looking unfinished. I have two other botanicals that I have not hung yet that I may try on that wall. My dining room opens up to my kitchen so I do have some limitations.
Thanks for the ideas if you think of anything else let me know.

Oh good, Red posted what I was kind of thinking. Unless that painting is part of a series, hanging anything else by it wouldn't do either justice. I also like paintings like that unframed, but that's just personal preference.

Looking at the pic, I got the sense that you needed a grounding element and Red's suggestion of a different rug would help that along. It doesn't look like there is much room for a sideboard or buffet table to go underneath. A piece of furniture with a couple of lamps and maybe a sculpture that was as freeform as the painting would help it look connected, if you have the room. I would also lower it, as it seems a bit too high. I realize that you centered it on purpose, but that isn't always the best placement.

As for the drapes, if you take off the valance and maybe add some trim to the edge and bottom that could add the splash of color without you having to find something different. I think the valance is at odds with the modern painting and furniture, but I like that the drapes kind of blend.

By the way, is that a German Shepherd Dog lounging back there? The coloring is similar to my GSD and that tail looks familiar :)

    Hmm,
I am planning on getting new drapes for the sliding glass door here are a couple of the fabrics I was thinking about.I really wish that I didn't need anything on them but I live in a townhouse and have dogs that like to bark at things that they see outside.

Here is a picture of the whole room as best I could take; I was almost in the basement. I have also included a picture of the valance over my sink. I have been trying to bring all of the colors together it has been a really slow process. I wish that I could fit a buffet under the painting that would have been ideal. The bump out of the wall is only 12" deep. I look all of the time for something that would fit there.

I actually just moved the painting up today I was thinking that it looked odd not centered. I can post pictures tomorrow of what it looked like lower.

Good call on the Geman Shepherd here she is

Keep the ideas coming. I love getting outside views.
I am going to bed now but I will check this post again tomorrow. Have a great night.

I love your painting and I agree with redbazel that the window treatment just doesn't work at all, especially with that valance. So I was glad to see you posted that you are looking at fabric for a new window treatment. I would keep the window treatment simple so as to complement and not fight with the painting. I think the third fabric down with red and gold stripes may be the best of those 4 choices. I also wouldn't put anything else up on the wall, let the painting shine.

I would let the painting stand alone (certainly until the new chandelier is added later) -- but I do agree that a new area rug might be the answer!

Is there enough room to add a thin console table on that wall? That would "ground" the painting -- and allow for more lighting options -- like a couple of buffet lamps ......

I would go with the darker bronze chandelier and the red/white/gold striped fabric. Then I'd put a rug under the table that matched your other reds and golds. I'd look for the rug in Craigslist.

If you want the painting to dominate, I'd put a light over it.

Would you consider painting that one wall with the picture an accent color---I will leave it here for other folks to help with the color....just think a deeper color on that one wall with your beautiful painting would make it a focal point.

What about this console table? It has pretty decent reviews and the price is right.

I want to get pinch pleat drapes and I'm going to hang them with a traverse rod that has rings and there will be no valance.

Does anyone have ideas about what kind of pattern for a rug? I am at a loss on what might look good.

It seems like the consensus like the dark chandelier would be better would that be ok since everything else I have is brushed nickel?

duffy, what is the measurement between the table and the wall where you're considering a buffet? I can't tell from the photo, but it looks like it's pretty tight. If you put something there, wouldn't chairs bump into it?

I have a small house, and I am slowly beginning to admit that you need to leave a certain amount of space for walking, despite how you *want* the furniture arranged.

Are you set on having the painting on that wall? I think it would look nice to move the mirror and the four prints where the painting is. Maybe a tall plant in the corner where the mirror and prints are now.

Were you planning to get a buffet or something for the wall with the 4 prints? To me, that seems like a more logical place for one.

    Love the wall color.

Just another one of those annoying answers that you didn't ask for. ;)

Yep, the drapes will really connect the two spaces. (kitchen and DR) Love your WT above the sink and the drape needs to coordinate with, (not match) it. Once you do that, the painting will have those colors in the drapes to relate to and won't look so lonely on the wall. The only thing I'd consider on that wall is an accent paint color, or the tone on tone stripes I just did in my DR. I have a long wall in there that I was constantly playing with, but now the stripes are subtle and interesting, and take away that blank wall look, without interfering with the art hanging there. I'm not sure you need a rug; do the drapes first and then decide. It's going to be a wonderful space.
