Counter depth refrigerators

I am interested in hearing from people who went from a large old fashioned clunker to a counter depth refrigerator. We are considering the GE Profile---double door fridge with bottom freezer---no ice/water dispenser on door. How did you find the downsize of space, especially during holidays and special occasions when food storage is essential?

Forgive me in advance...I'm probabably going to sound like someone's grandma here.

When we moved into this house in '88 our old fridge fit perfectly. It was counter depth before there WAS counter depth. We purchased it new in 85 and just moved it right into the space. Fit like a glove.

When it died in 95 (or so) we went to purchase a new fridge and DH and I almost had a fight over size. He insisted the new one would fit...I said it might fit but just barely. I was right. Width wise it is fine but depth wise it's about 8-10 inches deeper. Door doesn't open all the way.

My point in all that rambling was the original fridge was what we had used for years. Never found it to have a lack of space. While I've gotten used to having more space, I KNOW that we lived quite comfortably with what is now called a counter depth.

    Sorry for the ramble...

I am amazed at what they are calling counter depth. We just ordered a new counter depth samsung and it is still like 30inch deep. I found the only true counter depth 25" is the old freezer on top style. We wanted a change from the double door we have now and the new one will not stick out as much. Just gotta figure out what will work for you.

There have been a few threads concerning this, along with other questions, with CD refrigerators. I've linked two threads that may be useful. Not all the posts in the linked threads are specific to your question, but there are some posts inside the threads that are.

Pros and cons of Single Door vs. French Door Frig?

Do you love your french door fridge?

2 weeks ago we had our Jenn-Air CT FD fridge installed, in place of a not huge 25' SF Maytag white fridge. My wife has mentioned it every day how much she misses the extra room. We also added a beverage center, which will be installed tomorrow, so that will help. We have a 24 CF fridge in the garage, and amazingly it is always packed to the brim.

I would say that while we love the look of the CD fridge, we are not in love with the lack of space, and we have other fridges to overflow into. I would have loved a larger built -in fridge but we already spent way too much on appliances even with this "cheap" purchase. If you are like me, save your old fridge for the garage or basement.

So far, I don't miss my big Kitchen Aid Superba, which has been replaced with a Jenn-Air FD CD model. I am still keeping the Superba for the garage, though. I love the sleekness of the Jenn-Air refrigerator because I have such a small kitchen 9 x 10, so the trade-off is worth it for me. It makes a huge difference visually. I will say that the crisper drawers are not as deep, I will probably adjust and not buy too many vegetables. If you can recess the larger refrig to make it built-in that might be a good option if you really do need the space. In my case, it wasn't an option.

I love my Kitchen aid side by side counter depth. I don't feel like I am missing any storage space, and it feels really well made. I liked their french door counter depth model, too, but I really don't like the way I can never seem to find anything in bottom freezers.

I also have a second fridge in the basement that has a top freezer and is good for storing large party platters, etc.

went from standard depth Fridgedaire side by side to only 27" integrated (so even less than CD!) Subzeros. Now, I do have a totally separate freezer column, but honestly only half full. I LOVE the shorter depth. I never have old leftovers lingering and don't make the mistake of buying a second (or third) container of sour cream or parmesean because I couldn't see it all the way back there. We also have a beverage fridge, but I never used to store sodas or beer much before so feel this is a good true comparison for fridge space.

I have the model that you are considering. Been using it for about 5-6 weeks. I really like it. We had a 23 cu Amana side by side before. There are only 2 of us and I do have a extra fridge in the garage. It's much easier to see what is in the fridge. I would never get a side by side again or dispenser on the door. If there were more of us, I would have purchased a beverage fridge too.

Just to chime in here once again, I don't miss the water dispenser on the door, either! My old Superba had one and I didn't like the fact that sometimes water would make it to the hardwood floors, not to mention the fact that the little catch for the drips was white and with our hard water here, I couldn't keep it clean. Because it was white, It would get hard water build up/rust discoloration. I don't miss that either! Ditto with msgreatdeals, most of the time it will be just DH and myself, although my youngest son is currently living with us.
