No, it's not necessarily a bad design. The range doesn't have to be centered.

Symmetry is overrated. :-) Seriously, everything depends on your specific kitchen with its specific parameters and needs. Not a thing in my kitchen is centered, and I think it works wonderfully.

What might bother some folks (and I think this was the issue in the other post?) is when the kitchen has one main panorama (looking into it) and every single thing is meticulously centered from that viewpoint except for one obvious element.

Position has to be considered as part of the entire picture and as seen from the most important viewing points. Centered in many cases may not create nearly as nice a composition as another position. Also, visual importance of the unit itself varies widely from home to home. In one home a window might be the focal point, with the stove not even visible except when in front of it. In another, a giant stove and hood might be the central hearth of a huge open active living space.

Ditto circuspeanut. If we centered our range & hood, our cabinets to the left of the range would have been smaller and less useful. For me, it was more important to have the larger drawers for storing our pots & pans.

I designed our kitchen for functionality which meant the range ended up way off center so that one person could cook while another was using the prep island and another could be going dishes. I also believe that my kitchen looks great, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Symmetry in interior design is way over-rated IMHO

My cooktop is off center. On purpose and planned for functionality. In your case, I would rather have the space split as it is than to have only 22 inches on either side so that you have a larger workspace on at least one side.
And that corner would be almost unusable if it got too narrow.

Symmetry IS overrated. :-)

Don't go for symmetry, go for balance. In your mind's eye, if you attached a string to the center of the backwall and lifted it off the ground, would both sides balance?
