Thermador oven: electrical odor?

Hi all,

I'm paranoid about smells... especially when they smell like electrical wires burning. Last night, my husband used our new Thermador dual fuel stove/oven for the first time. A horrible smell emanated from the oven..... well, it seemed to come more from the little vent at the back than from inside the oven cavity. We eventually discovered a small, shriveled/burned piece of plastic (like packing tape) in the oven so we're assuming it was a burning plastic smell. The fumes were really strong, though. This morning, if I lean toward the back vent, I can still smell it faintly. We haven't turned the oven on again.... I suppose we'll try it tonight.

My questions for you are.... Do you think this much odor could have been from such a small piece of packing material? Is it normal for a new oven to give off an odor the first time or two? It's a bit like a burnt oven-cleaner smell. I've never had a brand new oven before. Should I be concerned at all? I am paranoid to turn the darn thing on again.

As usual here, thank you SOooooo much for your input.

Sandra
