layout help needed. thank you

I have posted this question a few months ago but my original message is gone including the replies. I need help with the layout. the oven is opening up at the end of a counter and we need to find a new place for it. the cooktop is centered under beams so needs to stay where it is. we cannot move appliances to the sink side due to windows and architecture of the house.

one idea is to move the fridge to where the pantry is and move the oven where the fridge is. another is to move the oven to the pantry area. which of these locations is preferred? any other ideas? Thank you!

    Below is the other discussion.

Is the counter section necessary in the center of the pantry wall? As I remember from the previous discussion, we talked about a whole wall of cabinetry and either fridge or oven centered on that end. That way it keeps either door from opening across a doorway/entryway.

Here is a link that might be useful: Your previous post

Can you move the DR doorway? If you can, could you...

    (1) Eliminate the small leg of the "L" of the sink run,
    (2) Move the DR doorway so it's 2'2" from the window wall instead of the inside wall, and then
    (3) Leave everything else alone

Just read the other thread...that's a peninsula, not a wall on the sink run!

    OK...I withdraw my suggestion above!

thank you rhome and buehl. this is a big help. rhome -i wonder why it didn't come up when i searched. thanks for finding it. i'll look it over again and try to "decide" what to do.

Did you try the lousy forum search? Google did the trick for me. :-)

Both options leave one appliance without a landing zone within 48" (4').

On the one hand, the refrigerator will most likely be used the most and you will be taking more things out of it at one time than the oven & MW.

On the other hand, items coming from the oven & MW will be very hot and really should have a landing space nearby for safety's sake as well as functionality.

Why is an oven opening at the end of a counter a problem? I can see it opening in a doorway as an issue (and you say you don't have room to open it in the other thread), but switching the refrigerator and oven would solve that problem.

However, you did state in your other thread that the fridge seems to be in an ideal spot already so you'd rather not move it. Is that because that's where you're used to it being? Do you think you could (or could not) adapt to a new location??? Often we're so used to what we have that we don't see how things would work if they were different...even if the change would be better!

i just assumed that the girth of the refridgerator would take up more space and need more space for opening and maneuvering on the outside than the oven would. Since the oven was too tight in that spot when the door is open, I figured the fridge wouldn't stand a chance. I'll look at the fridge specs again and reconsider. Thanks for your input.

plumberry, I think you're correct in thinking that the fridge would be even more crowded than the oven in that doorway. Fridge doors are open many more times a day than oven doors.

I like rhome's suggestion of placing the ovens between the pantry cabs. However, if you like them where you've placed them but are concerned about their doorway placement, then you could modify buehl's earlier suggestion of moving the doorway to give them a larger buffer. Give up 8" of the peninsula - 4' will accommodate 2 stools, 8" doesn't gain you another spot at the counter - and add that to the wall next to the ovens. The oven doors will still open into that entry but not by as much.

But I have to ask, is the peninsula seating in the dining room absolutely necessary? If it's just a "well, every kitchen must have counter seating" thinking, then perhaps you should rethink this. If you lose the peninsula, you can shift the DR opening as much as needed to give your ovens the buffer you desire, even by as much as buehl suggested earlier in her drawing.

so, i'm seriously considering fridge location on the pantry wall and oven location where the fridge is now only because someone told me that the oven should be close to the cooktop in case you want to move something from cooktop to oven. I don't know that I have ever needed to do that when cooking. though, i'm not a cook. wonder what you all think? Also, we aren't getting a special ss fridge, just a kitchen aid counter depth. I wonder if it will be more of an eye sore being in plain view from the dining room and while in the kitchen. any comments?
