Caulk vs. plumbers putty

I built and outdoor kitchen this summer and have a sink, side burner, and grill in it. On rainy days I get leakage into the under couner area. The surface is 1/2" granite tiles. The tiles are sealed and grouted w/expoxy grout and all of that is fine. Somewhere in my readings months ago I thought I read somewhere that it was not a good idea to use plumbers putty on granite. Is this true? Can I use your basic outdoor silicone caulk instead?

Ok, I just did a search which I should have done first, and see that plumbers putty is not a good solution for granite tops. So, should I use the silicone caulk under the sink as I would have the putty and fill in the area about 1/2" around the lip, place the sink, and then clean all the caulk that oozes out when I tighten down the sink?

Simple question. Are there any problems using a silicone based caulk on my granite back splash where it meets the granite countertop.
