I need a window

If you had only 45 inches of wall space available for windows what combination would you use? The sink is centered in this space. Contractor says one centered stationary with two casements (my first choice) on either side wont fit. Said three small casements wont fit either. Really need to be able to clean from the inside because they cannot be reached from the outside.

In my old kitchen, I had a window that size. It was a side slider that was fine, but I didn't enjoy looking straight up and seeing the middle bar. Not a huge deal, but something to consider.

Can you do one 45" window with a small side sliders on each end? I'm not sure you have enough space for that though.

Are these wood windows or vinyl?

Like Breezy had, we have a slider/glider. The middle bar is a bit annoying, but the window works, especially since we had a bit less than 48".

BUT, we are replacing it with a small bow window. We have a bit more space than you (3'11'' - or 47''). The guys who are going to do the work said that no one made a bow or bay that small. But when we called our local Marvin window dealer, the fellow there was able to put together a custom bow window. Not cheap ($1,400!!), but definitely doable.

So the moral of the story is don't take, "No," for an answer. Call around and see what you can find out. Good luck.

Oh, yes, as an alternative, what about a pair of casement windows?

How about one large casement two small, non-operable sidelight windows? Myself, I would go with a French door casement.

I like the idea of having either one big window or a combination of three to avoid standing at the sink and looking at the center frame. These windows are on a second story and can not be reached to clean without getting the extension ladder out--not a job I want to do. I have a view of a creek out the window so would like to be able to access that scene as much as possible. GC wanted to put an awning window there but that seems like it would be very hard to clean from the inside. What are standard sizes for casement windows? There has to be a solution.

    For Marvin, the standard sizes seem to be: 16", 18, 20, 24, 26, 28, 30, 36, 40"
    Anderson's sizes are less regular; 17, 20.5, 24.125, 28.375, 31.5, 35.9375.

Note that they (at least Marvin, not sure about Anderson) will make any size you want for a bit of an upcharge.

How about 7/28/7, with the 7's being non-operable? (These don't add up to 45, because I am leaving some room for the frame in between.)

Okay, scratch that suggestion. I just realized that the window I am sitting in front of is 44". I mocked up the 7/28/7 suggestion, and it looks kinda dumb. (I was trying to give you as big an operable window as reasonably possible.) I am now thinking more like 10/22/10.
