Kitchen bar depth

Hi all!

Someone here gave me a flash of inspiration. It was the thread about what you have on your counters. I hate visual clutter, since I have crap all over the place. It's getting better, though. :)

So! I have a very nice microwave base cabinet which I built in the bottom of an in-progress credenza. BTW, "Very nice" means I built it myself and you can't tell I did. But you can see the microwave the minute you walk into the dining room, there at the end of the kitchen.

I want to take out the base cabinet under my peninsula and put the microwave cab there. It's another, future project, because I'm going to have to cut the cabinet out from the peninsula and restructure the lazy susan. I found the latter on the side of the road and had to build the cabinet around it. But I digress.

The question I have is how much room should there be under the counter for knees? The microwave cab is only 21" deep because of the area for which I first built it. It would give me about 9" for two stools (I think).

Is that enough space?

Thanks!
