lcd/led tv in the kitchen

Hey all, based on the photo below, we are planning on mounting an LED/LCD tv over our desk in the kitchen. The smallest we have seen is 15" and figure we can go as large as 19". What do you think? How large would you go? Would you mount a TV in this location?

On a side note, it is so difficult to find a tv that fits the theme of our kicten, We would love something silver or even white but it seems like all smaller models and very dark.

Everything is black now. I've been looking for my own kitchen and it is so hard to find white or silver. Vizio does make a 19" white and Amazon has a few in stock.

There are some that fold under the cabinet - alas they are mostly black or black and silver but the TV would be hidden until needed. If I recall, Florantha had a link to one.

    Wonderful kitchen!!
And I have serious DeskAreaInKitchen-Envy. *insert pout icon here*

Last year we looked high and low for a silver-framed TV for my Mom. Just wanted a little one so that she could watch TV in her little eat-in kitchen area while she pays bills, etc.

    None to be found.
Someone offered us an almost new, 9" white, color portable, not flat screen, not LCD....just an older model TV.

    We took it.
I found an iron shelf that fits it like a glove.
At first, that glaring white TV stood out like a sore thumb in that darker corner of the kitchen.
Only in my mind.....because nobody else saw the thing as sticking out like a sore thumb.

Like hubby told me, it is what it is...it's a TV. No need trying to pretend it's something else or isn't there.

So, longer story a bit shorter.....only took maybe a month to adjust because now, I don't even know it's there.

I think if you get a black frame TV, just make sure it's thin enough not to stick out too far. Some stick out as far as 11 inches....not so 'flat panel' huh? lol

Heck, if I had a desk area like yours, I don't care if I ended up with a hot pink TV.....it would go on the wall, right where you want yours to go. :)

Have you thought about an wall mounted flat computer?

Not only can you watch TV but access recipes and GW!

    I love the touch screen.

I put a samsung 19inch LED lit tv in my cabinet and made roll back doors. Having a tv in the kitchen is a major plus in my world.

Absolutely a tv :). That was the best gift my dad ever gave me - fishing the cable through the kitchen walls and putting a cable outlet in there. It is in a similar location, and I have it on the entire time I am cooking and cleaning up. Perfect location to watch the Today show while you unload the dishwasher in the morning, or to watch the news while you make dinner at night.

I would go for silver though - white may be too stark a contrast with the cabinets. I hate that they don't make many 15" TVs any more. My mom has the perfect Sharp 15" TV in her kitchen, tucked into a corner but you can't get it anywhere.

    Good luck!

The screens are usually black when they're off, anyway. You could use a vinyl skin to decorate the frame. :) Also, look into computer monitors if you have cable or satellite with a tuner box. A lot of monitors are made to display TV, and more of them come in white or silver. You only need a real TV if you need the tuner. Or you can hook up a computer and use a software tuner.

I have a 22" (gift) sitting right on my island. I don't have a view. If I want to see something besides my cabinets, my studio or the side fence, I have to turn on the TV. :) The slightly larger model is great for things that are wide screened but not HD. They show up smaller than the regular picture.

We wanted silver too. I bought a 19" Apple LCD monitor, and mounted it on an Ergotron mount. It works both as a computer monitor for my wife's Macbook, and as a TV monitor. Plus, you can raise it, lower it and change the angle of the screen, so you can see it from anywhere in the kitchen.

You could put the same type of mount on yours, which would let you pull it out from under the cabinet and move it up to make it easier to see. We used the previous version of this model:

Thanks for the ideas everyone! Very good point, the screen is black when turned off lol. And the vinyl is a great idea too, I may have to look into that.

Vate, love your setup!! I have looked into monitors as I would prefer something with a very thin frame (led) but how could I get sound out of them as most have no speakers? As you can see, Ihave my cable mounted higher to support the wall mount and also a spare plug from where the phone is plugged in. I am looked to hide all wiring.

We put in a Venturer fold-down under-cabinet t.v-radio-DVD/CD unit. It's hidden on the left of range in this photo:

It's 15.4 inch in diagonal measurement and the face of the unit facing into kitchen is silver. The company also has some white ones in smaller screen sizes, I think.

Yes, the screen is a black hole, but I can fold the screen up when not watching it. Unfortunately, the CD mode requires screen down if you want to know what track it's playing.

Remote control unit has flaws--it requires very skinny fingertips to click very little buttons--but on the good side it has a magnet in it which can attach the remote control unit to an appliance for holding.

    >>> I have looked into monitors as I would prefer something with a very thin frame (led) but how could I get sound out of them as most have no speakers? There are a lot of options if you want an LCD with speakers. Here's a 19", under $200, with speakers and a TV tuner, and a VESA mount (you will need a VESA mount if you want to mount it on a movable arm):

With this unit, you could run a very short cable from your cable outlet to the back of the LCD, and plug it in, and you would be ready to go.

Very cool Florantha! However, since we placed the cable where it is, the undermount will make the wires too much of an eyesore.

Vate, I have seen that model actually. However, again looking for something with a thinner frame and not black if possible. The search continues! :)
