Finished Kitchen

I can't believe I am nervous about showing you pictures of my finished kitchen! I took the pictures yesterday and the sun was streaming in, so take that into account. You can't really see my blind very well on my window because of it but I do love it. OK, here are the paticulars.

Old kitchen--built in the 80's. Stock grade everything. I have a small kitchen--9 feet by 11 feet and that is wall to wall--so even less space once you put in the cabs and appliances.

Old kitchen pictures--looking straight from the living/dining area

to the right--old stove and micro hood combo

To the left--cabs and the fridge

fridge and pantry area--next picture is the empty pantry (a very rare sight indeed!)

I redid the lighting--went from the box on the ceiling to cans. I also did under cab flor. fixtures--T-2s with a warm bulb. I love them for baking. They don't make my counters hot for rolling out dough, etc.

New flooring--was going with Amendiom wood, but did laminate instead (Italian walnut--I think was the color). I decided to get rid of the awful builder's grade carpet in the living and dining room that had seen better days. All I could afford was the laminate after everything was said and done. Still mourning the loss of the wood....

New appliances. I went with a monster stainless steel french door fridge. I did build out a foot into my garage so it is cabinet depth. New micro (Sharp under counter model), and new dual fuel range (Bosch--it had the biggest oven space of the 30 inch models). I had them replumb for gas for the range. The oven is electric convection. I went with a Bosch glass hood so I could see my granite behind it. It really sucks! In a very good way! Hang onto the counters for dear life when it is on! You will go right up the vent if you don't. It is very modern looking and unobtrusive. I also have 7.5 feet of ceiling rather than 8, so my kitchen may look a little squatty but for the most part folks don't notice it.

My dishwasher is also a Bosch. I want it buried with me when I go. I LOVE the thing.

New sink (wish I had gone with my gut and gotten the black silgranite--but perhaps in another life). New disposal, etc. I love my Danz faucet. I will never have another kitchen faucet that a isn't restaurant style sprayer again. Makes clean-up a breeze.

I have Yellow River granite for the surfaces and did full backsplash. I wanted to see the granite and didn't want to go through the agony of picking out a tile to match.

Window treatment is a natural blind with a 6 inch valance. It can be opened from top up or bottom down. I love that feature as my kitchen window faces the front of the house. I can work in the kitchen in my jammies and no one can see me but I can still have the blind partially open to let in light.

Cabs are Columbia cabinets from Canada. Great company. I have natural maple--shaker style. They come with all the bells and whistles--soft close, etc. I love them. I have so much more space with the full extensions and frameless cabs than I did before.

In the beginning--I was going for a French Bistro look. Marble counters. Black and white cabs. Out of my price range. Then I was going for the quiet Zen look. Did like the sameness of the solid counter material. Then I found my Yellow River. It was all over but the shouting. I challenged myself to go more modern. I was tired of the country look--for me. I am so glad I did. I love the result.

This is the granite that started it all.

OMG absolutely gorgeous! Love the full granite backsplash in particular, not only for the looks, but also cause you won't have any grout staining behind the range to worry about. And the glass hood is an inspired idea to see the granite and keep the open airy look of the kitchen. Also, the crown molding is perfect - it's simple and clean and finishes the cabinetry elegantly.

Beautiful. Congratulations on your wonderful kitchen. One question: where are your outlets? Did you use Plugmold?

Beautiful-I like the granite backsplash a lot. You must love the huge windows behind the sink. No one sneaks up to your front door while you are in pj's now!

mustbnuts, it's gorgeous - I too love the way the granite is such a distinctive feature in the kitchen, and forms an unusual backsplash. I'd also be interested to know more your window treatment (source?).

    You must beyond excited!

Wow! I love your kitchen! And I especially like the floors: The variety of colors picks up the cabinet tone as well as the darker and lighter granite tones and the blind is just the right finishing touch. Great job!

I remember your black (?)sink cabinet and have been awaiting your finished pictures--everything looks great. You did a wonderful job of achieving the modern you were going for while creating a space that will stand the test of time.

Great job! I've been waiting for your finished pics for a while. I got excited when I saw the thread. Your cabs, floors, and hardware are all beautiful, but they take a back seat to that gorgeous granite. I know I've said it before, but your granite fabricators are amazing. I love the way the pattern flows across from the counter to the wall and around the corner. Enjoy your beautiful kitchen.

Beautiful!!!! I love that you took some risks with the cab colors & floor wood; not your run-of-the-mill choices. Everything complements & showcases the stunning granite so nicely.

Great job! Thanks for sharing :)

I have been awaiting your unveiling (because I LOVED the earlier "sneak-peek" pictures you shared) and it has been worth the wait! I am so excited for you to get to enjoy such a beautiful, functional kitchen. I know this may sound odd, but your kitchen reminds me of mine, like in an earthy way. (I've a white kitchen with matching slab countertop / backsplash.) I wonder if we're twins, but yin and yang twins ....

Congratulations -- I'm just so happy for you!!!

I think your new kitchen is fabulous! I have two questions.
    1. I don't see outlets in the granite backsplash. Where are they?
    2. Does the granite go up to the ceiling behind the chimney vent? Thanks.

Fabulous! I think you're going to have to change your screen name from mustbnuts to something different, because nuts you are not!

I love your floor, it just sets everything else off so well! The granite is fab and I love that faucet in your kitchen!

Thanks also for all your great comments over the past few months, they have helped me tremendously!

    Congratulations!

mustbnuts, the only thing you must be nuts about is your nervousness about showing us your gorgeous kitchen. WOW, what a transformation! I, too, remember the pics of your incredible granite. You did a great job and I know you are going to enjoy your new kitchen for a long time.

WOW! I can see why you let your granite guide the rest -- it is extraordinary! And you certainly let it be the star of the show, the rest of your kitchen really "supports" it in the best possible way! Congrats!

mustb - hadn't been here in awhile and just yesterday did a search looking for your finished thread - glad i didn't miss it. wanted to see how "the other yellow river" kitchen turned out. :)What a dramatic look you put together.using the sink cabinet as another accent was very creative. enjoy it!!!

Mustbnuts, I LOVE it! Sounds like we had a similar odyssey-- I too started out envisioning something more country or bistro, then was drawn toward frameless cabs, stone materials, and a more modern, but earthy, warm look. I'm glad you are loving it-- you make it sound like it came together on it's own but I am sure you worked very hard every step of the way! Congratulations on your beautiful kitchen. I'm sure it will lift your spirits for many years to come.

I don't normally like mixing cab colors, but I think your black sink base is terrific! And no need to apologize for your floors either - I think they are beautiful, and a perfect choice.

Congratulations on a beautiful and inspiring design!

I always get so excited when I see someone has posted a Finished Kitchen and yours is beautiful! I especially liked seeing that you used laminate floors and seeing how great they looked. I'd love to see more pics. We too have been considering laminate due to budget needs. My husband is all for it but I've been hesitant. Your floors (and everything else) look fantastic. Enjoy!!!

I LOVE it! Congratulations! Also a bit jealous b/c that is just the kind of kitchen we would like, but since our house is really, really old, it just wouldn't fit. I especially love your faucet, dark/light cabinet scheme, and the floor. Great job!

What an inspiration! Everything works together so well, and like others have said--the granite is the centerpiece.
My kitchen is a St. Charles from the 1950's and when I figure out how to upload the pictures I will. It's kitchens like yours that makes me wonder what style do I really want. The simple clean lines are so beautiful.

mustbnuts... I tuned in every time just to see that granite of yours. In the new pictures... it's just off the scale. That piece next to your frig!... It's just absolutely PERFECT! Just a fabulous job. You get me excited about my upcoming remodel!

    Fantabulous!!!

Did you keep the same pantry door?

Hard to tell if you have room for Undercabinet lighting. I see the plugmold- what a great idea not to interrupt your beautiful granite. Those look like frameless cabs, but with room underneath?

I have rarely seen pale cabinets that I like, but those are the perfect choice- well done!!!

It's wonderful MustBNuts! The laminate floors look very nice as well...no need to feel too badly about the loss of wood!

I also think the blinds are cool...I'd love to put something like them in our kitchen since we have a western window...but my DH doesn't want any window treatments to block the view!

Wow! I just walked in home from work to all these wonderful messages--especially nice since it was a rough day at the office. Thank you all for all of the nice compliments.

About the pantry--yes, it is still there but quite full at the moment. That didn't change, but if I had to do it over again, I might put the fridge there and do a pantry where the fridge is now. I thought of that after the cabs were about to go in.

The blind. I am sorry you really can't see it in the picture. It is really pretty. Believe it or not, I got it from Lowes! I had ordered a Levilor blind and it was just awful. It was beautiful sea grass but it was made horribly. I told them to take it back. I had ordered the top down, bottom up blind and it wasn't that at all. The quality was definately lacking. Won't ever do a Levilor again.

This one is a Bali. I had to special order it as my window is a very strange size--roughly 69 inches by 33 inches. It is out of bamboo and reed. It is plain but adds a bit of texture.

    Here is a swatch

For those of you wanting to know about my plugs. Yes, I have plug mold under the cabs. GREAT stuff! I do have one outlet on the side. That is for my phone and to turn on the under cab lights.

My cabs have a frame that hangs down a bit and so it doesn't allow my under cab lights to show nor my plug mold. It doesn't look like it from the front as it looks like it is part of the cabinet. I chose that style for me over the kind that has a piece of molding on the bottom. I wanted plain since my granite was so busy.

Thank you all again. This was a very pleasant way to come home from an awful day.

    Mustbnuts,
I know it's only a short time but how are you liking your Bosch dual fuel range? That is my current front runner since I gave up the idea of induction. Also which model of Bosch DW are you so crazy about?
I absolutely love your sink cabinet.

Thanks Owls! I am liking my Bosch duel fuel very much. However, I am still learning how to cook on it. I haven't cooked with gas for about 30 years. As always, I wish I had a 36 inch stove instead of a 30 inch, but my kitchen is so small, there just wasn't room.

The duel fuel model I have has the biggest oven in the 30 inch range. It is convection and does a million things. There is a proofing mode, a dehydrating mode, I LOVE the warming oven below (I thought I would never use it and I use it all the time). So, all in all, I do like it very much.

The dishwasher I LOVE is the Bosch SHX98MO(9)UC. It is rated the highest in its class. It is great. I got a good price on it at Lowe's.

Your kitchen turned out so beautiful with one of the prettiest granite counters that I adore! I love your kitchen floors and they truly look real and add to the overall stunning look of your kitchen. I love your sink and faucet so much. I wish I had a window in my kitchen when I am doing dishes to give me a view. Your window is so nice and large and perfect! Thanks for sharing.

Mustbnuts, Thanks for the reply. I too haven't cooked on gas for 25 plus years. I currently have an old coil cooktop so I know this range will be such an improvement. I love the large oven and it looks like I will get a 2nd 27" oven if it makes the final plans. Still deciding between the bosch and miele for the DW. Your kitchen does not look small, it does look like you addressed the smallest detail. It's inviting and eye pleasing. The wild wonderful granite backsplash has me moving in that direction. I too am leaning toward granite with lots of bold movement. I hope I have as beautiful a space to create wonderful meals and memories as you have created in your home.
