Warming drawer placement

I'm working on the layout for the kitchen of our new build and would appreciate those of you with warming drawers chiming in on what works (or doesn't) with its placement.

It would take up less room and be visually pleasing if it were the bottom of micro/oven/warming drawer "tower". My concern is that it feels like a poor placement ergonomically. There is space for it in the adjacent cabinet, which would put it about the same height as the oven.

Where is yours? And what do you love or hate about its placement?

Do you have a layout to post? That would help.

Mine is in my island, across from the oven and cooktop. It is the top drawer in a stack of three and it works very well for me, as I can take items out of the oven, turn around, and place them in the drawer to keep warm. Also, when I make pancakes or French toast, I use an electric griddle on the island, and the pancakes/toast go straight from the griddle to the drawer until I'm ready to serve. Finally, I have seating on the other side of the island and that's the side guests hang out on, so when I'm on the 'working' side of the island, I can pull appetizers etc. out of the drawer and put them right in front of guests.

I'm thinking if yours is down low it might not be as useful. Imagine bending down to put in or pull out casseroles, pizza, warmed plates, whatever. (Although since I'm 5'11" my aversion to stuff way down low might be stronger than others'.) I use my warming drawer pretty often so I like it to be handy. Pulling pots and pans out of storage drawers down low doesn't bother me at all, because I don't have to be careful about keeping things level/not spilling, and the items aren't hot. My first warming drawer (pre-reno) was at the bottom of my range, and while I found it handy, I like my higher drawer much better.

Please post your layout and the great folks on this forum will chime in!

My mother has hers in the middle of her Microwave/Warming Drawer/Wall Oven stack. It is very comfortable there and blends in with the other appliances so well that many people don't even know she has a warming drawer.

Now's that something I hadn't thought of, Danvirsse!

Chicagoans, that's exactly what I'm thinking of. I'm 5'9" and it's a long way to the floor.

I'll do my first try at posting a picture. If all goes well, it'll show the very open floor plan of the kitchen. Living room is to the west, informal sitting area to the east with a tv in the back side of the sink island. Dining area is to the south. 4 ft between the islands with a bit more between the back counter and the islands. No uppers except on that back wall.

Warming drawer either goes in the stack labeled "oven" - at the left end of the back wall, or it goes directly to the right of it.

Drat! My rightside up photo is showing up turned 90 degrees!

I had one in my old house underneath the cooktop. I used it every day and loved it. I had a shallow drawer below my cooktop, and my warming drawer was the second drawer. The third (bottom) deep drawer held my pots and pans. In another house, I had it underneath my oven, and I hated it. I rarely used it, hated all the bending down. Plus it collected dust being so close to the floor. My current kitchen is too small for a warming drawer, and I miss it! Oh well. It was so great for getting meals to stay warm all at once. I could plate dinner while I was doing something else, warm up plates while finishing dinner, etc. It was extremely useful. Mine was 36" wide.

Waen warming drawers were all the rage a few years ago, the general consensus was that they didn't get used unless they could be accessed easily without bending and were close to cooking areas. HTH

Had a warming drawer at the bottom of the micro/oven "tower" for 26 years, probably used it 26 times.... now my W/D is up higher, and in nine months have used it three times! ...not a real necessity for me, I guess

Scrappy25 is correct. A few years ago there were a few posts about warming drawers and those who located them near/next to their cooktop/range used them. Those who located them in places like the bottom of an oven stack didn't - unless you count using them for storing paper cups....

I originally had planned to put mine in a stack like you're planning, but with the advice here, I changed the location to the cabinet next to my cooktop and in the middle drawer position. It gets used a lot - at least 4 or 5 times a week and sometimes every day. I think if it had been in the oven stack it would have been less useful - too far from the cooktop, MW, and table and too low.

Mine is in the middle drawer position in my peninsula. It's 2 steps from the cooktop and one step from the oven and microwave. Like Chicagoans, I use an electric griddle on the peninsula to make French toast and pancakes for brunch and drop them onto a platter in the drawer until ready to serve. At the same time my husband makes omelets at the cooktop, which also go into the drawer until all of us can sit down to eat.

I love my warming drawer and use it for most meals. The location works well since it's convenient to the ovens, cooktop and griddle, but not in the way if I'm finishing something on the cooktop while my husband is transferring grill or oven foods into the drawer.

Thank you all! Your answers were just what I was looking for. I believe I will use it enough to justify it -- particularly when company or family are over. But you've convinced me that it needs to be next to my oven not under it.

Firsthouse_mp, that's brilliant. Our drawer could also go to the left of the cooktop down by the dining table. Further from the oven, but it would be right where most of the cooking and serving would take place.

    Dang, I love this forum!

My daughter's warming drawer is at the bottom of the stack of microwave, oven, warming drawer. She never uses it. Mine is just under the counter-top of my serving island. I use it more, especially when entertaining.
