Prep sink idea

mom2sethc's recent thread on sink runnels brought up some beautiful photos (see link below) but also got me reminiscing.

Our last apartment before we bought our house had a tiny, dark kitchen. A perfect square, I fitted that kitchen with an amazing amount of add-on storage, top to bottom. It was as high-efficiency as possible. I regularly turned out huge potluck dishes as well as monthly formal dinner parties for a dozen people for fifteen years.

Then we bought our cottage and remodeled it before moving in. I designed a kitchen of moderate space, with lots of light and all the countertop I didn't have before.

But one thing I couldn't put in and still miss, was the old-fashioned drainboard sink. Despite all the counter space I now have - 25' instead of 4' - that drainboard sink was great for prep. The one I had looked exactly like this:

....but of course, they have newer versions like this:

The thread about runnels made me realize if I had to do a kitchen over again (not that I want to, I HATE remodeling!), if I have room for a prep sink it will be a drainboard sink. Or, if I can only have one sink, I'll stick with my beloved super-single but add runnels to the countertop this time. It really expands the prep space for those times you need it.

Have you ever had one thing you miss from an otherwise bad/mediocre kitchen? What was it and were you able to incorporate it into your new kitchen?
