Help with kitchen sink

I am going crazy with all these decisions. I'm really hoping someone here can advise me. I'm trying to decide between the Elkay Gourmet Collection (ELUH231710X) and the Blanco Precision 10 515822. Both are stainless steel, single bowl, undermount sinks that fit a 27" cabinet. I've narrowed it down to these two because they seem to be the largest sinks I can get that will fit into a 27" cabinet.

The differences are the following:

Elkay is 8" deep and Blanco is 10" deep. (I really can't decide which depth would be better. I'm nervous about a 10")

With Elkay I can do a rear right or left drain rather than center drain (not sure if this is a good thing or not)

Both bowls would be 23" wide. Elkay is 16 3/4 in length whereas Blanco is 16. As I said, Elkay is 8" deep and Blanco is 10" deep.

They look pretty different but I don't know that that really matters to me all that much. I just want the sink that is going to function better for us and I have no idea how to make that decision. Can anyone help me out?

Thanks so much!

If you go with a rear drain you may want to make sure (i.e. talk to your plumber) that if there's going to be a garbage disposal that there's clearance in the cabinet for it to be installed AND connect properly to the DWV line. I haven't installed a sink with a rear drain location yet, but just looking at those spots makes me wonder about whether I could get a garbage disposal in there with the limited clearance of the walls of the cabinet.

I just purchased a 10" deep sink b/c I thought it would be easier for hand washing things. Hopefully, there are others that might be able to help.

I don't know if this will help but I have a Blanco double sink and one side is 10" deep and the other side is 8" deep. Now, because they are undermount add an inch to each depth because of the thickness of the counter. Having said that - I prefer to wash my dishes in the 8" side. The 10" side is too much of a reach. I'm 5'8' and maybe I have to bend over further - I don;t know.

Agreed with above... I think 10" is too deep for comfortable hand-washing. The other thing about the Elkay is the offset drain; ultimately that will give you one side with greater room/flexibility (ie: for pull outs, storage) rather than drain/pipes in the middle.

Looks like there's no difference in gauge between the two (both 18 ga). Are you sure the Elkay is 8"... when I google it it says 10" deep (on aj madison)?

You could also check out the Julien line, they have 8" or 10".

blfenton - we have a grid at the bottom of our 10" sink and it makes all the difference on my back, 5'8' here too.

Here is a link that might be useful: Julien sink

I posted the wrong Elkay model number. It is actually ELUH2317X which is an 8" deep. Good point about the rear drain and disposal. I will check on that tomorrow. I love the Julien sinks but I think I would have to go down to a 21 inch to fit a 27 inch cabinet. I am also 5'8 and really concerned about the 10" depth though it seems so common these days. I am also concerned about how well the Blanco would drain. Any ideas on that? It seems to have grooves that might help but it is a bit more on the square and flat side despite the 10mm radius in the corners. Arrrgh! I am tired of these decisions.

    Thanks again for weighing in!

I am 5'7"-- we got to stay at a place with a 10" sink for a few days before choosing our sink, and could not stand how deep it was. It was terrible for my back (never mind DH's back-- he's 6'3"). We went with the 8" sink and have no regrets.

Go with the 8 inch. I have a 30 inch Elkay Lustertone sink that is 11.5 inches deep before the undermount, which makes it 12.5 inches. It is definitely too deep!! I have a grid and it lifts it up an inch, but my back still hurts. I am going to try to figure out a way to raise the grid a few inches. It is also slow to drain, because it is like draining a tub. I did not get the garbage disposal because I have septic, but now I wish that I did, so that the water could drain faster. Elkay is a great sink. Good luck.

i am 5'7'' and our new sink is about 3/4 inch farther down to the bottom than our old sink... i think that's because we went from overmount to undermount. the depth to the bottom of the sink really is just a tiny bit less comfortable. i love our new sink, but am ever-so-slightly annoyed that it is just a bit deeper to the bottom. it would probably be a great thing if i was a shorter person.

that said-- possibly you will get less splash-back from a deeper bowl?? any thoughts on that???
