Knobs or pulls, which do you have?

Which do you have and why? Do you like your choice?

If you have knobs on your cabinet doors, do you also have knobs on your drawers?

I have all pulls. My decision was based on ease of use. With pulls I can open cabinet doors with my 'pinkie,' if necessary. Also I think they are would be easier to grasp...as one gets older.

pulls in the current and will do the same in our new house when we get around to adding some.

I like it because nothing snags on them clothes, my tubing on my insulin pump etc. like knobs do. My pulls don't stick out past the anchoring point though.

They are also easy to open like ashlander I can do it with just a finger and very little effort.

We have both. Pulls on drawers and knobs on doors. I just like the look of both.

    I have both

Pulls. I have knobs in my RV and don't like them as well, so we went with pulls for the kitchen. Our previous kitchen didn't have any at all, so I always had dirty cabinets!

Pulls on the drawers, knobs on the drawers. Although I like the look of pulls (I went with 5 inch, contemporary arched pulls -- somewhat resembling the handle of my GE Profile oven), using all pulls gave my kitchen the overall appearance of too much metal. I wanted the focus to be on my cabinet, so I found a complementary pull & used those for my cabinet doors.

    Good luck!

We have both - knobs on the cabs, except for the pantry cabinet doors and pulls on the drawers. I like the way it looks and it works for us. :)

Lyfia is right about knobs catching on clothing, but I still like flat backed knobs (I've had in other kitchens) for the reason others like pulls--easy to open with the side of my hand when I'm holding something. I guess my pinkies aren't strong enough or long enough to be comfortable using them to pull pulls. :)

What I have now is '80's style with no handles at all, which is a pain and a half :) In my opinoin, as long as you've got functional hardware you can't go wrong :)

What about cup pulls vs bin pulls vs "straight" pulls and knobs???

We have 6" open arches. My DW didn't want to use knobs because they always caught on her clothes. I also never liked the fact that they tend to unscrew with heavy use. Here's what ours look like:

I hadn't thought about knobs catching on clothes or being harder to open. I guess I have to visit my local Lowes and try some out. I have always had pulls and thought knobs might look nicer but now I am not so sure!

Funny... I had heard concerns about pulls catching on clothes too... I was sure to select pulls that were closed on the ends, rather than open. Good luck.

buehl - we actually bought cup pulls for all the drawers, but my 10 year old son said he didn't like them. He proceeded to say he would have to bend lower to open the bottom drawers, because your hand has to come from underneath - whereas a regular pull can be 'grabbed' from on top. Needless to say, my DH and I agreed after thinking about it and returned the cup pulls and bought straight pulls. From the mouths of babes :)

No knobs in my kitchen, I have handles on the cabinets and cup pulls on the drawers. I just don't like knobs.

Before we demolished the old kitchen I put handles, pulls and knobs on cabinets and drawers and made everyone who came through try them all and let me know which they liked. It was unanimous - no knobs.

I chose to use both knobs and pulls and in general knobs on doors and pulls on drawers. Having either all knobs or pulls would, to me, be a bit mono-designed, lacking visual interest.

here is an example of our side by side looks.

    Knobs on doors
    pulls on drawers

I can't stand having to grasp a handle to open a door. Since I do like the look of the handles, I have them on my drawers. Just make sure its all from the same colllection so it looks coordinated.

Pulls all the way. When I have my hands full of stuff to put into a cabinet/drawer I need something that is easy to open. I don't like knobs as you cannot open them with just one finger.

Knobs on the uppers and pantry, pulls on the lowers.

groschuni - I have that pull in the 3" size

I have knobs now, and never again! I wear yoga pants alot, and the darn tie in front is always getting hung up on the knobs.

Knobs on upper cabinets and lower base cabinet door (only one of these in our kitchen - see pic to right of stove)
Handles on drawers (2 handles on drawers 30" or larger)
Handles on base cabinet pull-outs (ie where our trash/recycling and spices on either side of the stove are)

Example of one section of our kitchen:

I have blue tape pulls right now :(

I cannot for the life of me decide on pulls that I like.

Knobs on the cabinets and pulls on the drawers. It seems easier to use that way.

Knobs on doors (and pull-out spice drawer) and pulls on drawers. Nothing on rotating corner unit door.

Well, after several trips to the store we decided to go with all pulls. They must have thought we were nuts at Lowes, going around the kitchen department opening and closing all the doors and drawers!

The knobs were fine but I felt with the pulls that we were less likely to touch the cabinet doors when opening them.

Does anyone know if Lowes matches internet prices?

I shop at Lowe's frequently and often bargain with open and display items. I haven't done with packaged or original condition items. However, it doesn't hurt to try.

Print out the internet page, bring it to lowe's and show it to them as proof. Talk to the department manager would be best. The salesman or cash register person normally doesn't have power to give you a discount.

I just bought an open box 1.4 cu. ft. GE microwave at Lowe's. When I saw it, the salesman said that it was only 10% discounted. A manager happened to be there, (I didn't know), I complained that it wasn't a big discount for being Black Friday. The manager asked me: "How about a 25% discount?". I was very happy to take the bargain.

    Good luck to you!

Knobs on doors, pulls on drawers...like the look, pretty classic combo, etc.

Othertime, I have blue tape pulls right now, too. It was a last minute fix for Thanksgiving, but they work pretty well.

For those of you with knobs on doors, where do you place the knob? If you locate it so that the screw head on the inside misses the cabinet frame, it looks a little high to me. I was thinking of counterboring the inside of the door so I can place the knob more in the corner.

    What is usually done? David.

Question 1: If you put two pulls on drawers 30" or wider, is it hard to open with one hand?

Question 2: Is the consensus that drawers 30" or wider *should* have two pulls? Or do people use one pull generally?

Thanks for all the help!! This is a very useful thread.

    Bumping - I have the same ? about 1 vs 2 pulls...

We used a combination of pulls, knobs and cup pulls. Bin pulls are not in yet. Bin pulls and pulls on lower cabinets and knobs on uppers. Trying to post pics

Sorry - my first successful attempt to post pics and I forgot to resize the second one. Are cup pulls and bin pulls the same thing? Or are they used to describe two different handles?

Jmfromil: sorry I haven't thanked you...I hadn't thought of that. In a family of tall people (DD is 11 and already 5'8" & DS is 5'11" + at 13yo!) that's a concern! Thanks!!!

Groschuni & Bklyn2pok: Where did you get your pulls? From Scherr's? Elsewhere?

2 vs 1 pull on drawers > 30"...see the following threads for some discussion on this topic:

    Thread: 5' long pulls on 18', 24', 30', 33' drawers?

Thread: I did a search and still need answers re pulls on drawers!

(I just bumped them as they were about ready to fall off!)

    vwhippiechick ,

I love both the knobs & pulls. Where did you get them? I am looking for something similar in brushed nickel. Thanks.

these pull vs knob threads are soooooooo helpful. one thing i know is that i will be going with one, probably larger, pull for my 36 inch drawers because i don't think i will use 2. thanks to everyone for weighing in (even if it is NOT my thread, lol)

groschuni, i love your double arched pulls. will you share where you got them? thanks!

Jessie: we also went with one big pull on the wide drawers and really like that. This has also become a handy place to hang a towel (which is hidden when guests come).

Sahsah = just saw your post. I selected the knobs at the cabinet shop. Not sure who is the maker but I can try to find out. I also got bin pulls but when they came to put them on the drawers they are much more "coppery" than I wanted so it is back to the drawing board on those. I will try to find out the manufacturer and if they come in brushed nickel.

I was going to put pulls on everything, but the bases of pulls we chose were too wide to fit on the frame of the cabinet doors, so we used knobs on the doors and on the smallest (12") drawers. Our pulls are heavy 6" ones and even the 36" drawers look fine and work well with just one pull on each. Here are pics:

[As you see, we still have work to do, but the essentials of life -- wine and breadmaker -- are in place! ;-)]

We found ours on ebay for $1.25 each and they're really good and solid.

I like the look of mixing pulls and knobs. I wanted to use old fashioned bin pulls, but my husband doesn't really like them. So we're trying to find some other type of pull. If we can't decide, we may end up going all knobs. This is fine, since we have a small kitchen.

About using 1 vs. 2 pulls for a drawer....our installer told us that if you use two, you'll end up always grabbing one and it'll pull the drawer out of whack. So he recommends using just one.

    we have both

    all the drawers have pulls

most of the doors have knobs

the large doors in the pantry have pulls

I have to check and see if i have pics

thinking there is a picture in the FKB but not sure what it is under

maybe unfinished since i still have a ceiling to do and heating riser to box in

there are pics in the FKB in the

Just found this thread again but wanted to weigh in on trader_deb's question . . .

We made the decision to use 2 handles on all our drawers 30" or larger mainly for aesthetics as it was more pleasing to *our* eyes that way. Otherwise, our cabinets just seemed too stark and bare . . . the handles are a bit like jewelery and dress the empty cabinet face up a bit. :-)

We have Blum hardware on our drawers and don't have the slightest problem opening the larger drawers with only one of the two handles, even in areas where they are loaded with heavy items (like under the cooktop where our pots and pans are stored).

It really comes down to personal preference. I always advise people to look at pics of kitchens online and in magazines and pick out handle configurations that appeal to them (and make note of those that don't). It can really help take the guess work out of what will be a pleasing result for you in the end.
