Color Consultation needed

This is x-posted with the Home Decorating Forum.

The cabinets are supposed to be ready in 3 weeks. The doors will be raised panels. The perimeter cabinets are going to be painted white. The floor is 18 x 18 on the diagonal. Here is the color (the Campbell's soup can is for comparison):

btw, I've cropped this picture 3 times on photobucket and my toes still show up!

The range is Viking. It is stainless steel except the front is Graphite Gray. Looks black in swatch but it is really a dark charcoal gray.

All of the other appliances are stainless steel.

I need help picking out a countertop for the perimeter and for the island. And a color for the island. As it stands right now, I've told the cabinetmaker to paint the island black, but that could change to a different color.

The kitchen opens into the family room, which is currently painted SW Humble Gold. The FR has the same floor as the kitchen, covered with a rust and gold Oushak rug with hints of sage green.

I need recommendations for countertops for the island and the perimeter. And a recommendation for the island color.

TIA

What color are the perimeter cabinets? Do you want the countertops to be in the same color family as the floor or contrast with the floor? Are the countertop runs long or short? Do you like movement or no movement in granite?

Ditto what jb1176 said. I don't know if you will like it, but we have basically the same colors as you (exception: maple cabs in spice-color) We have golds, sage, & dark-pumpkin colored walls with stainless appliances. Countertops: Quartz Cambria--Nottingham. Island: Renoir granite. Quartz is fairly dark & consistant. Granite has some movement to lots of movement!

    jb,
The perimeter cabinets are going to be white, no glaze. Initially, I had planned to have black countertops, and a black island with a white countertop.

Lately, I've been second guessing myself. DH started looking at a lot of the magazines I've left laying around. He pointed out to me that in the pictures often the floors and the countertops match/blend. So, I began to think that perhaps I should go toward the golden brown family.

Or maybe I ought to go toward the grays to accent the range. Perhaps a nice gray granite with a charcoal gray island with Caeserstone Misty Carrera countertops (would much prefer marble, but I think I would pass out with the first etch/stain). The cabinetmaker had a sample of Paradiso that looked charcoaly, but when I look at it online, it looks brown.

I have a very small kitchen. The runs are all rather short. One is 3 feet, two are 2 feet, and one is 4 feet, but that is in a corner. The island will be roughly 2 feet by 5 feet. I think a lot of movement will be lost in my small area and short runs.

The cabinets are going to the ceiling.

    I am just overwhelmed!

Stainless steel perimeter counters might be nice with a wooden butcher block island top in the same tones as the floor.

    bbstx,
Your plan sounds very nice and your runs are short. I am afraid a stone with lots of movement and color variance would appear as different slabs in the different runs and therefore I think you might look at stones that are fairly consistent.

Your colors are fairly neutral. I would stay away from white counters because your floor is a warm color. One school of thought suggests that horizontal surfaces should be in the same color family. Personally, I think that with a warm neutral floor you can use just about any warm consistent stone. However, having said that, one of my favorite stones is Jet Mist in an antiqued finish. I think it would be beautiful with the Viking range with the charcoal front and would compliment your island cabinets, and it has a little movement with the white whisps throughout the dark gray stone. Jet Mist would be very nice with the white perimeter cabinets. It is kind of a gray soapstone look One thing I would want to be careful of, however, is allowing the warm neutral floor to work with the starkness of white cabinets.

There are some beautiful warm brown/gold/gray granites out there. I wonder if Arandis or Juparana Fantastico, or Juparana Ipe would work with your other selections?

Let us know what catches your eye. Happy hunting!

How big will the island be? Will it have a sink in it (do you need water resistant surface)?

I am concerned that your "cool" dark gray/black/white kitchen will not complement your adjacent living and family room that have a "warm" harvest gold/sage green/rust palette.

Just a thought: how about glazing the white cabinets with a brown glaze to make them a warmer cream, and warm lighter green granite on the peripheral counters. Warm sage green painted island with a cream, gold, wood, or dark grey top. With a small kitchen, a black island might look too heavy. I like the graphite range and think it will look fine however you go.

How about a sage green for the island with a goldish granite with black and grey tones like New Venetian Gold or butcher block on it in similar color tones to the floor. For the perimeter, a granite with sagey green, grey, and black tones, like Wild Sea. Backsplash could incorporate all the colors in a muted iridescent glass tile with golds and greens and greys.

With a very small kitchen I'd use one color surface. Live wire oak's suggestion of New Venetian Gold is a good suggestion. I think it would be beautiful with the range you've chosen.

Thanks all for your suggestions. I love the idea of a butcher block countertop on the island. However, after helping with Thanksgiving dinner at Mom's today, I *know* I want granite every where. Mom has formica. Every time I took something out of the oven, I had to be careful where I set it. The island is going to be a major landing area from the oven.

Astridh, the island is going to be appx 2 feet x 5 feet. The top will be unbroken.

hit submit too soon. I really like the idea of a sage island with NGV. I'll have to mull on this for a while.

Keep those cards and letters coming!
