Help! layout help needed fast

DH wants to order cabinets *now*. I don't know what to do! Should we lose the island? I'd like to keep it! Just different somehow. Can anyone give design suggestions?

I posted the layout drawings here on 11-24:

It seems you didn't get help because you posted on Thanksgiving when people were probably busy....but also, your drawing is difficult to respond to, because it has scale problems...You can see that your 30" sink is smaller than your 24" dishwasher. Scale is SO important on a plan to see how things relate to each other.

The other huge problem you have is your aisles. You can't seat people in only 27" of space behind the island, and those are inadequate aisleways even for walking. Your aisles should be at least 36", remembering that 24" deep cabinets have doors, drawer fronts, and counter overhang that add about 1 1/2" to the depth, taking 3", total, from the aisle, when you consider cabinets on both sides...Like in front of your dishwasher. I have 48" between my dishwasher and island and wouldn't want less than 42". Some do OK with 36", but you need to plan 39" aisles to end up with the clear 36". I hope that makes sense. Recommended aisles for seating are 48-60".

Please try to get your husband to wait a bit. Remodeling a kitchen is a very expensive and long-lasting project. It will be a daily aggravation if things are too crowded, and maybe some things will trouble opening, etc. It pays to take your time and get it 'right.'

I'm no layout guru, but the island does seem too big for the space. How about a banquette in the corner with a table. It would give you some landing space, but you would lose much needed storage. Hmmm. I'll have to think on it some more.

I also had trouble with your layout as is. I'm going to add my caution to Rhome's. Please don't rush into this! I know what it feels like when DH wants to just be done with planning and get moving, but please make him take a breath and wait. My DH was the same way many months ago. I slowed him down (again) and we still haven't ordered cabs. I posted my layout hand-drawn on graph paper here several times for comments. While I didn't always like what people had to say, there were many comments that added positive value to my layout. I know that my kitchen will be so much more functional than it would have been if we rushed it. Draw your layout again, take a deep breath, post it here, and enjoy the holidays!

Layouts that are hand-drawn but to-scale and, preferably, on graph paper are fine. As RHome410 & others have said, when the scale is off, it's difficult for us to comment.

Have you read the "Read Me" thread? It has a lot of information about posting a layout. Scroll down to the "Layout" post. For one thing, we need wall/window/door dimensions and the distances b/w each wall/window/door...not just cabinet dimensions.

I also echo others very strongly suggesting you slow down. Taking extra time to plan now will save you headaches & money down the road. It's just like any project at work, issues/defects are much, much cheaper to fix when found during planning than during execution! In fact, you should spend much more time planning than you do implementing the plan. Many of us here spent a year or more planning b/f we were ready to order cabinets, etc. So, take your time and spend it wisely with more planning! (It will also give you time to save even more money for the project...or for your savings.)
