Help! cabinet height/distance question

I'm hoping you can help me. My kitchen (or the pile of rubble as we like to call it) is in the throes of reno. Today, my contractor hung a few of the upper cabinets and they look low to me. Contractor says standard distance between upper and lower cabinets is between 16 and 20 inches, and in my case, the distance is 20. My Manhattan apt kitchen isn't large, but it has 9'5" ceilings, so I could raise the cabinets a bit (but I'd have to tell him quickly!). I was wondering what the smart, talented and tasteful people here have done. Thanks!
