I've used a stovetop griddle before and for what we cook, I like nonstick, but I think cast iron would be nice. I don't have any experience with indoor grilling though. That smoke detector just got too annoying. :)

When we redid our kitchen, one of my little treats to myself was a Lodge cast iron grill/griddle that sat across two burners. (I got it to reward myself for not getting a new stove, but rather *repairing* the one that was here when we moved in :))

It's by *far* our most used piece, now (which tells you what we eat). We just keep it out on the stove, actually. I LOVE it. I didn't want an artificially non-stick surface like Teflon, and there was something about the been-there-foreverness of cast iron that I knew would last and last, even with our family's somewhat lax approach to cookware maintenance :)

Bed Bath and Beyond is where we got it. I trusted Lodge more than any other brand. It says preseasoned, but we seasoned it more ourselves, as it seems most people do.
