final kitchen layout decision

Am at my final review of my KD plan--prior to committing to cabinets.

Here is a link to this photo bucket website and three jpegs of my 7 page KD plan. Hopefully I have executed this correctly to enable their viewing

http://s274.photobucket.com/albums/jj249/dsommerl/

There is an overhead floor plan and then elevations showing each wall. I have not uploaded the island plan.

I am asking for opinions about the placement of the refrigerator versus the stacked wall oven/microwave now on the wall with the range --mantle hood. I am thinking about trading places of the stacked ovens with the the reefer This would eliminate the 18" tall cabinet now to the right of the ovens---but then allow me to widen the tall cabs to the right of new stacked oven location --which would take up 30" on that wall (versus 48" taken up now with the reefer there).

ANy other comments about my plan would be appreciated

Thanks!

The fridge, where it is, is nicely convenient to the eating area and cooking/prep areas, and others can access it without invading your work space...I think I'd leave it where it is. If you move it where you propose, you may have people taking a 'shortcut' through the main work area to get things.

That's a good point and is why it is where it is (the reefer)--However, on the elevation--the wall with the glass front cabinets----there is an under counter Ge Mono panel front reefer--ice maker That wall is the cocktail center---with sink and a second dishwasher (left base cab).
thinking is that this under counter unit would serve the beverage needs of people at the radius bar height top---and those in a large great room--media center (football party area)
From a cooking and functional stand point---I think the switch would make sense as it would then put the reefer--cook top and main sink all very close--BUT---as you point out--it would then take the main reefer out of play for the party attendees. So, does the u counter ice/reefer unit cover me?
which the kitchen opens up to (not shown on the plans--but is to the immediate left of the bara center wall.

Another consideration is that I already own a ss front 48" reefer---(vs the paneled unit shown on the plans)---and I could then just use that (it's only a year old)---would look better if placed where the oven stack now is---more hidden visually----
Entering this space from the garage (which most people will do--those I know)---one would look right at the big huing of ss--reefer--where it is now (the garage door entry is the door at the left of the mantle hood wall.

Still just a plan----so, anything can change (or not change in this case)

I'm having a hard time reading your plan, which is possibly why you aren't getting more responses. I also don't know which rooms are adjacent to the kitchen and that would be helpful. From the opening on the left end of the mantle wall looks like it would look into the other room through the wide (dashed line) doorway, not at either fridge location, so I guess I'm confused.

I see one small sink- at the bottom of the plan where the counter curves, and there doesn't seem to be room for a dishwasher and UC fridge there, so I'm not sure where you're talking about. Also, you are the best judge about that being enough to handle your needs. It won't be great, I don't think, to handle the needs of meals eaten at the island seating.

One thing: I have had dishwashers in 2 different locations before and it was a dismal failure. In the house we're building, they'll flank the main sink. It seems that things need to go to the 'other' dishwasher (no matter which you're closest to) to fit in properly or make a full load, then when they're clean, they're in the more inconvenient location. If you're trying to find something, it could be put away or in 1 of 2 dishwashers...Usually the 2nd one in which you look. And maybe still dirty, because that 2nd one is only partly filled...from a few days ago...and no one has remembered to run it and now the dishes are smelly and gross, maybe even starting to grow mold. Mostly, it's easier for 1 person to load the dishwashers from one spot, rather than go across the kitchen to try to fit things properly in both.

Maybe take a copy of your plan and make brighter notations with a marker about where appliances are and which rooms are accessed from which doorways...Then post it with the others.

Sorry DSommer, but RHome's right. I tried to look at it last night and other than finding the trash pullouts and hood, I couldn't really make out anything else. If you could post a clearer picture and, as RHome mentioned, indicate where your kitchen is relative to the rest of the house, it would help (so would adding any missing dimensions b/w walls & windows & doors).

Sorry---this is my first pass at this photobucket thing

I have these plans in a pdf file format--and apparently when converting to a jpeg file for uploading to photo bucket--a lot of detail gets lost

If I can figure out a better way--I'll re post

    okay--trying this again
Looking at the layout view---the Great Room is to the left--left of the bar center (the elevation showing the glass wall cabs.
The garage is to the right (behind the mantle hood--cook top wall.
Below the bar center cabs--is a panel front dishwasher to the left--then a sink base--then an under counter ice maker---bev center (paneled front).
The question is whether or not to switch the reefer with the stacked oven set up (which is to the immediate right of the mantle hood/cook top---(shown on that elevation of the cook top wall).
Also---I am going with drawer cab bases flanking the cook top (vs drawn doors--pullouts)--and the drawers under the cooktop will become doors with pull outs.

To further orient---elevation 7 shows the wall to the LEFT of the island---
Elevation 9 on that same page shows the wall behind the radius top end of the island---the wall I refer to as the bar (this wall also has the sliding door set up)
Elevation 2 shows the mantle hood wall (garage is on other side of that wall)---this is where the oven and micro stack now is
Elevation 7 shows the wall where the reefer is now located.
the other elevation on that page shows a view from yet another adjoining room (dining room--I now use as an office)--this shows the cabinets around the corner from the current reefer location---at the end of that space (behind bi fold doors)---will be a small laundry
