kitchen sinks

I would love to hear the pros and cons of one large kitchen sink compared to a divided sink. We are getting ready to remodel. Thanks

There are many threads on this topic, just search.

Yes, I know we discussed this recently. Try a search. I like a divided sink b/c I keep one half full of stuff I need to scrub. Then, I keep the disposal side empty so I can use it. I think it depends on how you work....

I have one large sink - Bates & Bates SS farm sink. If I didn't have my particular situation (large front pull down drawer I just hated and wanted to get rid of AND still keep my cabinets), I would have done a smaller disposal sink and one large like kelleg's. I just don't think the large sinks are as handy. If you have room for another sink somewhere else in your kitchen, I'd say go for the farm sink. My humble opinion - after removing a sink like kelleg is talking about. I still miss it.

Sisi1850...I see you're new to this site. Welcome! There's a lot of good advice and information here.

About your remodel. This is my experience with my large sink.

Pros...hides A LOT of dirty dishes until I'm ready to deal with them, my turkey platter cleans up beautifully as do cookie sheets, etc., to wash dishes I fill a pan or bowl with soapy water, our thanksgiving turkey prepped very nicely in this sink.

    Cons...NONE! I love this sink! http://mrdirectint.com/sinksandfaucets/3118-stainless-steel-sink-p-34.html?osCsid=a182e97be49e10c634e09fc0d23d71ea

Previous posts about deep sinks mention people getting backaches bending over or reaching in to do dishes. I'm 5'9" and I've never had any problems.

I LOVE my big Ticor single bowl Ticor sinks. I use a dishpan to wash dishes and have a small dish drainer that hangs over the sink on the other side. I have absolutly no complaints at all about these single sinks!! They are fantastic.

I adore my sink with one small side and a large side (ticor- forgot the model number). The small side is big enough to put a plate or pot if I need to, but is mainly for scraping, disposing, etc. The big side is huge and fits all my pots and pans, cookie sheets, etc and they can be in there and still have the disposer available for new dishes coming in to be cleaned.

My Mom's went in yesterday. She insisted on a double. She washes plastic stuff and pots and pans on the right and then will place them on the grate on the left to dry out of sight.

This is the sink base a few weeks ago from the front doorway to the kitchen off of the entrance, in full sight, no missing it.

This a bit closer in, the cutlery trays from the first picture were still in the sink on the right when I took this.

I think it is completely subjective based on function, preference and your layout.

One really big "plus" for the single bowl sinks is that I can lay cookie sheets or broiler plans or huge frying pans flat in the sink for soaking. I LOVE this feature!!

old1880home (I like this sink!) space saver:

Also: note: try to think a new way:
    -install expensive granite:
-spend lots of money on kitchen:
    -learn to clean differently:
-don't waste all that money using soap on granite or windex: what is the point. Learn to clean a new way.
-dishes in the sink. Not such a good idea to keep soaking dishes all the time in an undermount sink. (I never see problems with sinks "falling"): but it's so much eaiser to clean the pots, pan and dishes immediately and put in the DW vs. leaving them to soak. Really don't need a hugh sink.
most people I see get a 60/40 sink: big on left/small on right 9 1/2" depth sink. Not saying that is what I like: that is most ordered sink.

I really like the sink old 1880home posted: and I myself would install the Blanco:
#1 My favorite sink is the : the drop in:
Blanco Platinum Axis 6s W/int. Drainboard Drop In - 511-739 (able to keep the food pre mess in the sink! I like that idea! keep away from granite)

another blanco sink granit that you can use to pre-food:
Blanco Blanco precis 1& 3/4 Multilevel - 222-695 (undermount: pre for food or cutting area)

Everyone has their own opinion and reasons for sinks: Most customers don't put much thought into the sink. That I see!

I have the Blanco Silgranit 1 1/2. The big sink is huge--can set a roasting pan down flat in it and the little sink is great for setting a few handwash items in to dry while keeping them hidden and off the countertop. I also use the little sink to toss dirty measuring cups and kitchen tools into while I'm cooking and then load them all into the DW at once.

I also have a prep sink which the kids just love to use for hand washing, etc. Seems like it's just their size.
I almost nixed it in the design but am so glad I kept it!

Old1880home, I noticed your sink sits back on your countertop a bit. I'm on the short side and I don't think that would work for me. sisi1850, if you are on the shorter side as well, I'd consider getting a sink closer to the edge - maybe a farm sink. If you are taller, I don't think it would matter.

    ccoombs1 - love that sink!

    Here's my sink.

I much prefer my big single sink (ticor 30 by 16 by 10 approx interior). Everything fits in there....the high chair tray, the refrigerator drawers and shelves! It's wonderful. It does hide the dirty dishes and I rarely wash small things by hand, so if I need to I just add a large bowl. Now, I do have a small prep sink as well, so maybe a large single isn't as attractive if you don't have a second sink available.

Double bowl sink here (Ticor S405D)! I love it! The larger bowl fits all my pots & pans, including largest cookie sheet; the smaller bowl allows me to soak things w/o having to fill a large sink.

It think the key to a double bowl is to have unequal sizes. If they're equal, neither bowl is large enough or small enough.

See the thread linked below for more discussion on this topic.

Had both, like both, EXCEPT...if at least one side of your double sink isn't big enough, get a single. Two too-small bowls are bad. So if space is limited, a single is the best choice, but when you get more space, it depends on YOU.
