OLLD 12/16

Good morning ladies! Happy Sunday, hope everyone is happy and well. We're having more rain here today, it's so lovely.

I saw on CNN this morning that a little boy who survived the Connecticut shooting is refusing to allow anyone to answer his front door because he believes the shooter is coming back for him. My God, if you cannot feel safe in your own home.......

Anyway, what exciting plans do you all have for today? We have terrific plans! We're doing nothing! Just relaxing and football and maybe some nachos, stuff like that. I love a good rainy, lazy Sunday, don't you?

See Ideabook "The well appointed guest room" April, 2009
There is a photo of light brown wall paper with white trees and birds silhouettes. Hmmm. Probably would not "go" with red ochre. I'll keep looking around.

    @olldbobbi,
Can you attach a photo of the bedspread you like?

eztia, I tried but it didn't work. It's mostly white. At the bottom of the foot it's brown, with individual brown leaves sort of climbing up and go only half way.

Do you like any of these lights for your bedroom?

@olldbobbi, the second light is a possibility. The thing is, it gets dusty so quickly here. I am afraid the light would need cleaning more often than I could manage. The ceiling light is now directly over a queen size fully electric hospital type bed. I am thinking we will have to use scaffolding to even reach the light!
    @olldbobbi,
I think the bedspread you have in mind sounds good for the space.
So, now to put brown wooden shutters on the windows to match the floor?
How high are your ceilings? I was under the impression you had a housekeeper like the rest of the olld's. except me :))
    @olldbobbi,
On second thought, I would put white shutters on the window, the same as the other two rooms. Paint the window wall white.
    @jen
This is a member of OLLD's guest room. We are helping her a little bit at a time as she tells us what she likes. Right now we are being tactful about bedspreads.
Olldbobbi is planning to put shutters on the window. If you had read her initial requirements list, you would know that the screen must stay to hide ventilation equipment.
    @olldbobbi,
The ceilings are standard. I just found out I could stand on the bed and reach the fixture. My broken toes did not appreciate my effort.
My kitty is telling me that I must stop and go eat dinner. Back in a while.
Another fan for my club!!! ez, sorry to leave you abruptly, had a bit of a panic attack. Don't stand on the bed with broken toes!!! OMG wait til they heal, please?

ez, thanks so much for all your help, I'm deleting my post.

Hey Jen, we are a friendly group who discuss many things as well as design dilemmas amongst ourselves. We have this thread to keep our chatter off main postings. If you read the whole of today's thread you will understand. We are not exclusive, we welcome input from others but everything we do is in a lighthearted and friendly way.

I'm sorry to say your comments have come on a little strong for us here. I'm sure you have some valuable ideas to impart and Bobbi would certainly welcome them but could you please keep them light and friendly.
    Hey Bobbi - come back.

That was just sooooooo not nice and definitely uncalled for.

    We love ya still.

Hey, bobbi and creeser, love the recipes and will use both. The crock pot ham and the coke... I will definitely try and roo, your suggestion gave me an idea of roasted asparagus and several different mustards. You girls are the best.

@Jen, look back on our posts, in "Other". We are the most delectable bunch of OLLD broads and we have so much fun. Sometimes our chatter is just sharing what is going on in our lives, but off this thread we take our discussions seriously. Understand that, as a group, we have a lot of talent, education, experience and passion for design. Should you have something you wish to offer, feel free to join in.

What project you are working on? Post some pictures. We always enjoy seeing design ideas from other houzzers.

If you read the opening comments here today, you will see that we are mourning for the families in CT who have experienced the most horrendous event that could ever happen to anyone. Please, keep them in your prayers. We must remember what is truly important in our lives.

eztia, 10:15 PM on Cape Cod and kitty, "JING", is telling me, very loudly, that it is time for bed. Good sleeping tonight, chilly, rainy and I don't have to get up early for my walk. And, I like the possini light.

I am not seeing a picture of the bedroom. ????

    I do have a headboard for your consideration :>) . http://www.houzz.com/photos/1142393/Hacienda-Headboard-headboards

    @jen,
What I meant about "initial requirements" was that the member of OLLD stated them early in the thread. It is always a good idea to read all the way through a thread so that you have a good understanding of the situation before making a response.

OLLD is an acronym for "Old Ladies Love Design." Everyone in this group of women is over 50 years old.

I am sorry you and the group got off to an unfortunate start. Let us begin anew, shall we?

I am working on trying to repair or replace a ceiling light in the bedroom.
Another member is having major reconstruction done on her home.
More than one member is painting walls, with varying degrees of success.
And one member has spent months doing a major redecoration of the rooms in her house. The last thing was a little bedroom with pretty good "bones" except for the awkwardly placed ventilation system. That the room needed a lot of TLC was a given. So, how to help when presented with a room like this? One step at a time, listening very carefully to the "client."

YIKES!!! Judy it is DIET SODA in the ham - not coke.

That Possini light is really different, wonder what it is made of? I liked the Simplistic one but I can't have anything like that as the salt sea air corrodes the chrome. Have to keep cleaning it all the time to keep any dust off it which seems to slow the corrosion........................

and bobbi - I DON'T have a cleaning lady either - can't handle other people poking around in my personal space.
roo…..:>) Coca Cola? You are so funny! Get high on ham?
Bobbi, just saw you comment on the radio DJs here and boy is that one BIG can of worms. Practical jokes like that are pretty much the Aussie way and they were really shocked when they were put through to the ward. The hospital was very quick to point the bone to take the heat off themselves, they have Royalty and bigwigs there all the time so where were their PR people. Protocols should have been in place and all staff on alert and aware of them. I really think the hospital should be thanking the DJs for exposing their total lack of security and protocol procedures. As for the nurse, that was sad yes, but she obviously had other issues - how big we will probably never know, I just hope the truth outs eventually to settle the whole thing once and for all for everyone's sake.
BTW, what is the difference between a croc and alligator? Roo?

I had a cleaning lady once….once…until I realized that she was here to clean my soul, not my house. Little verses from the Bible, written on post-its and stuck to the toilet seat, and inside the fridge, did not encourage me to follow along her path to redemption.
@olldroo and judyg, my step-mom used to make a ham with a can of regular Coca-cola on it. Made a nice glaze.
I would not want to ingest the artificial sweetener in a diet cola. I am now an organic food person and no longer drink soda pop (regional expression).
Crocodiles have teeth that are visible when their mouths are closed. Alligators have teeth that are concealed when their mouths are closed.
Going to bed now and will say a prayer for the families in CT. May God bless them.

    Until tomorrow...
    Night, night Judy.
This coke thing is getting confusing. Bobbi said to add a can of diet soda and judy wrote back that she would try the ham and coke, so I corrected her.

We don't have alligators here in fact alligators are only found in the USA and parts of China. Crocs have a thinner snout than a gator, crocs are light tan in colour where gators are more a greyish/black but the colours vary according to the quality of the water they live in. Gators are timid where crocs, especially salties are very agressive and are always eating people. It is only the fourth tooth of the croc that is visible - not that I am going to stand around and count.

Love your ex-cleaning lady Judy, wonder how much time she spent writing the verses. Hope you weren't paying her by the hour.

Our hams all come pre-cooked and we eat them cold. Some people do put a glaze on them and bake but I find a hot ham too salty and sickly. Which reminds me, think I will go buy one, I just hang for Christmas and ham off the bone. Trouble is our weather is all over the place and too erratic for salads. I don't find salad very satisfying in cold weather.
OMG I am just watching the news now and of course Newtown is still the lead story, did you know 2 million guns were sold in the US last MONTH!! And there are more gun shops than supermarkets.

Morning ladies! Let's see....first, eztia, thank you, I appreciate your support! Let us look at Jen's Houzz history. Oh no! She has NONE! Not one comment, not one ideabook, not one saved picture. I do believe, as judyg said last time, this is an experienced Houzzer with a new name. Haters gotta hate. But that's not MY problem, it's THEIRS, Let us not be taken in by their game, but do let us ignore them, shall we?

eztia, I checked on the Possini light, and it says fabric over base but it doesn't say what the base is! It's very pretty, though.

For the ham, I think you can use diet or regular soda. Being diabetic I've always used diet. Either way it's really good!

More rain due here today and all week. I think this is more rain than we had all last winter. Awesome!
Morning, ladies, will move on over to 17, but I think the soda (tonic) thing is geographic. When I hear diet soda I think CocaCola. Coke has become a catch-all name for anything carbonated. Kinda like Kleenex…what ever you use to catch the sneeze is a Kleenex. :>)

I have never had anything carbonated in my life! There is something about the bubbles...
judy, you've never had a soda, ever? No rum and coke, seven and seven? Wow!
creeser, did I do something to offend you? Are you mad at me? I'm sorry !!!

Hi all. The Newton shooting here has cast a large, low hanging cloud over everyone. I was in the grocery store yesterday and noticed every little one in there, like I was in this hyper-aware state of their existence. You could feel the sadness, it was paplable. I've never felt anything like this before. So sad.
Oh PH, it is just devastating. I went in the mall yesterday and there was a mother in front of me with twin girls about 5 and it just made me tear up. So tiny. How close are you to the school?
PH, I'm on the other side of the world and still tear up at the thought of all this. I have a 6 year old granddaughter in a 1st grade class in LA so can really relate to all of it. My daughter even took her out of school early on the day of the shootings, she couldn't bear to have her at school any longer that day. I just hope and pray the angst people are feeling will grow sufficiently to force changes to legislation there - and immediate ones at that. The gun parties might be strong and outspoken but people power is stronger if everyone unites. John Howard, our Prime Minister at the time, did it after we had a mass shooting in Tasmania, in fact at the moment he is being held up as a model world wide for what he achieved.

I'm just dreading the next few days with all the funerals, it is going to be such a hard time.

Hi, I'm about 1/2 hour away but from your comments, we are certainly not the only ones devastated. I just hope we keep this sense of tragedy as we petition out congessmen & women to bring gun control back from the brink of the extremist theology that the NRA spouts. Can you believe, I heard a Mr. Pratt (president of Citizens Gun Rights or something like that) on CNN last night saying that this event could have been stopped if the teachers and admin at the school had been armed????!!!! Pierce Morgan let him have it. Let's track & remember who does what when we next go to the polls.
I saw that Pierce Morgan interview! He did blast him and another guy, too. And yesterday in a town near us, the police arrested a teenager who posted unbelievable remarks on his FB page about how the kids deserved it, and how he was planning a similar action. They confiscated many guns and stuff from his room. His parents had "no idea"!!!

What??? How sick but I'm so glad kids like this are moronic enought to post to FB. And how do parents not know their kid has guns? This is mind boggling all the way around.
We saw the Pierce Morgan interview too. I just love him, I think he is brilliant.

How do parents not know their kid has guns? The same way parent just don't know anything about kids anymore, is it laziness? are they too trusting? uncaring? too busy with their own lives? or time poor from working to pay debts? Somewhere society has lost it's way.

I read an article this morning that disputes the relationship between video games and violence. Here is an extract from it.

The comparison demonstrates that the US has the highest rate of gun-related crime in the developed world, and that countries where games are most popular have low gun-related murder rates.

The data shows that eight of the 10 countries that spend the most on games have less than one gun-related murder per 100,000 people.

Surprisingly, the US does not spend the most money on games per capita, ahead of only China, and yet it has the highest rate of gun-related crime by far, hovering around 3.25 per 100,000.

Australia is the sixth highest spender on games but has a gun-related crime rate of under 0.5 per 100,000 people.

We have a big problem here with roughly the 18 - 25 age group and alcohol fuelled violence. Friday and Saturday nights are really bad and all the blame goes to the legal drinking age here of 18. My eldest lives in Germany where alcohol consumption is as high if not higher than ours, yet they have absolutely no violence problem at all. Go figure????
    last modified: 13 years ago
OH, don't get me started on video games and violence! The thing is.....when kids play these video games and they "die", they just restart the game until they "die" again. They don't realize dead is forever! I would love to see billboards go up in the more violent neighborhoods that say just that "DEAD IS FOREVER". There is no second, third, etc. life! And the cottage industry that has sprung up with the RIP T-shirts is insane. I never want to patronize one of these stores! And the candles, and the balloons, not to mention stuffed animals. There was a 19 year "father" who shook is 2 year old to death, because she touched his Nintendo.

The Bill of Rights grants us the right to bear arms, and I think that's the key. If we called assault rifles, and machine guns and anything other than handguns something other than arms, then the Bill of Rights no longer applies. We don't have the right to bear "deadly weapons", we should call them that. And handguns should be limited to no more than 4 bullets, if the shooter had to stop and reload there would be time to take him/her down and save lives.

Bars and liquor stores pay a hefty premium to sell liquor, do gun stores? They should! And it shouldn't be any small amount.
You do have to wonder bobbi, and I couldn't agree more. There must be some brainwashing there but why does it affect some countries and not others - there is a missing link somewhere.

I read or heard something - maybe one of you guys said it - that when the Bill of Rights was introduced assault rifles and the like had not even been thought of. "Arms" certainly is a huge word and has a very loose meaning. Has there ever been an amendment to the Bill of Rights? I guess it would take a national referendum to do it, certainly now would be a good time.

Obviously, at the rate guns are selling over there, high taxes on them would increase the price, hopefuly out of a lot of peoples' reach. Trouble these days is the internet, it is really going to cause a lot of problems.

Think I told you I belong to a Computer Pals Club - a seniors' group where we all help each other learn computers and associated modern technology. We have a monthly meeting and often have things beamed up on the wall to discuss. It was decided to buy a laser beam so whomever was addressing the meeting could stand to one side and use the beam to point out things in the text. The president went online and purchased one from o/s and the next thing he had Customs down on him like a ton of bricks wanting explanations and giving him stern warnings. We had had some problems with idiots buying these and using them to blind pilots when they are coming in to land so the importation of them has been made illegal. BIG oopsie there, but because our need was genuine and so innocent it didn't enter our minds at all.
roo, there have been amendments to the Bill of Rights but it's pretty impossible. I mean, you have to practically stand on your head and spit chicklets to get one. I did hear today that the NRA was greatly affected by the Connecticut shooting and may be loosening up a bit.

If you've never seen the movie "Bowling For Columbine", make seeing it a priority. It will open your eyes, much the same way the movie "And The Band Played On" opened people's eyes to the AIDS epidemic in the 80's. Reagan is often viewed as a hero, in some people's eyes, but to me he'll never be anything but the idiot who did nothing for AIDS. I lost too many friends to this disease.

Those laser beams are so dangerous to pilots. I guess you can't outlaw everything, you have to pray that people have enough sense, but that's not always the case, is it????

And, funny, not that long ago if you wanted to learn the Russian language you could count on the CIA being all over you!
I can imagine it would be a bit like our Constitution, a couple of changes have been put up for referendum over the years but all have been defeated. I've actually never sat down and read it all, that is on my "one day" list but from many things I have seen our forefathers were very wise men, but I'm wondering if we actually have anything as specific as the right to bear arms. Can't remember if I have seen that movie or not, it does ring a bell. I'm going to have a play around on the internet to see if I can find me.
