Our "New" Painted Brick Fireplace and Screen

I wanted to share my before and after after viewin tons of photos and websites on painting brick fireplaces and screens. There was only 2 sites I found where people used silver high heat paint for the screens, but I took the plunge and it came out well.

I used Kilz to prime the fireplace and painted it with a blend of two gray paints I had left over from another project. I used High Heat paint in Silver I got from Lowes, 2 cans. Even my husband said he was impressed (he wasn't for me painting the brick). So thanks to everyone who shares information on your home projects!!

We had a huge ugly fireplace wall that we painted white. It was a scary decision but so worth it.

We painted the walls a grayish blue and the built in shelves a grayish brown.

Painting the fireplace doors is a very practical way of extending the life of the doors. We have suggested that trick to our customers many times. Did you replace the handles or just paint them? Out of curiosity and since deal with stone veneer, did you ever consider covering the brick with stone veneer?

@North Star Stone, yes I considered the stone veneer but we only had a paint budget. The handles are the originals and were spray painted too.

I love the transformation. Very handsome. I also like the supports you added below the mantle/floating shelf. It makes more sense now and seems integrated with the unit. The fireplace surround (which you have already done) can be painted with barbeque paint. This one (below) used to be brass and I painted it out black to give a cleaner, more crisp look.

Thanks Judith. Funny thing about the mantle supports is the gray paint makes them stand out, they were always there :-).

I love the work you did on the fireplace. I'm about to do this myself and I'm wondering if you used a flat paint on the brick or paint with a slight sheen?? I'm also wondering if part of my brick can be sheet rocked...it's an entire wall and I want to cover the upper half with sheetrock

Murphyboy1, the answer to your question would be yes, you can. Use a mastic to hold the sheetrock in place. Just remember it is not nonflammable so may not be the best material to use as a permanent solution. We had thought about using painted paneling above our mantel and decided we didn't want to take the risk. We are happy with just paint.
