How can I modernize this kitchen?

It's not my house yet, but when it is all the window treatments and "decor" will be gone. I talking about cabinet pull replacements, countertops, etc.

I am having trouble visualizing what to do with this color cabinetry and the floor color.

Just getting rid of the window treatments and decor is going to make a big difference. I like the cabinets and floor--their wood tones look good together. The photos don't show details of the countertops or hardware well enough to see what they look like, so it is hard to weigh in. But neither seems outdated from a distance, and the general effect of the darker counters is good. If you are trying to get cleaner modern lines you might take down the arched woodwork over the window and change the lighting, And if you want to put your own personal touch on it you could redo the backsplash (it looks a little dated, but not so much that it is a problem). But my best advice would be to live with the kitchen for awhile once you move in before making any changes. You may find you don't need to do anything beyond the windows.

Change the curtains, change the curved window pelmet, change the light fixtures and furniture and it will make a huge difference.

You could really change the look of this kitchen by updated hardware, lighting, window coverings and backsplash, then bring in modern furniture. I think the cabinet and floor colour work well together too.

I agree with taking down the wooden arch above the sink along with all of the curtains, valances and chair pads. Looks like the kitchen table is in the way of the oven as well as the sliding glass doors. New lighting would be in order too. Repainting as well. Seems from your photos everything is monotone. Backsplash is very dated.

Decorate the kitchen when you move in and see if anything needs to be changed. It's not a dated kitchen. You might be happy with it when you make it yours. Most importantly...enjoy!

Beautiful kitchen! I agree with Belle Chaise. You may have to do almost nothing. Here are several kitchens with more updated furniture but traditional elements otherwise. This would be more of an eclectic look.

For example, you could keep the window treatments and then add very clean-lined furniture. The one element I think I would recommend changing are the light fixtures.

I would add some photos to your idea book, showing kitchens you like. It could be you want a clean-lined look all the way and the traditional drapes would bother you.

Once you have added more photos of your vision, let us know.

What would you suggest as a more modern fixture for this foyer?
The decor is all going away - wall tapestry, furnishings, etc. going for a more modern or transitional look.
The carpeting on the stairs us also bring changed.

More thoughts on kitchen, now that we have a better idea. Yes, you can paint the cabinets, but a large expensebut I don't feel it is necessary. Lighting and hardware will be your closets friends.

Best advice above is to live with it for a few months.

What type of kitchen table would you place in this kitchen? (We want to go in a modern direction.)
I think a dark simple table, with very clean lines, and simple leather chairs in a white or colour would work well. Something that was very modern in style might look to out of place with the cabinets.

You are asking for "modern". The table in there now appears to be too large for the space. There doesn't appear to be enough space around the oven. So, I think a smaller, round table would suit the space better. These are not the exact size you need, but just showing some options as far as modern style.

My suggestion is to go for a round glass table with dark wood with cream fabric chairs which will give you transitional look

Looking for a good basic taupe wall color for the entire main floor of this house ( with off-white moldings). Similar to what it has, but freshening it up. Don't want green or gold undertones in the taupe color. Would like to use Benjamin Moore or Sherwin Williams. Any suggestions?

    I don't see a name or # --am I missing it?

I would remove the window treatments and rooster decor. The cabinets are actually not bad looking. Perhaps change the hardware and light fixtures to nickle and change the backsplash to a glass subway tile. Finally , some modern barstools and your set!

The kitchen, minus the scalopping and window treatments and decor is really pretty. not much to do there.

The rest of the house, I would remove the carpeting and either install wood floors or tile floors that look like wood, or refinish the existing wood floor. the biggest bang for your buck. carpeting is very outdated. paint trims in a white.

I think the wood floors are just fine. What really stands out to me as looking "old fashioned" are the cabinets and the backsplash. Choosing a paint or stain that would hide the wood grain on the cabinets might help. Some new, sleeker lighting fixtures might help too.

You seem to be wanting to do a lot to a house you have not yet moved into.

Live in it for a time and see how you feel. You will be surprised with the other owners things out, how different it looks.

Before you decide to do things to the kitchen, you need to have a plan for how you want it to look when you are finished. You can paint cabinet, remove hardware, replace backsplash, but, without a plan, it will all not be the coordinated look you are wanting.
