A "water conditioner" that uses salt would not address acidic water. Sounds like you have a water softener and at 25 years old should be replaced with a correctly sized industry standard softener which would be more water and salt efficient. Additional treatment equipment might be necessary depending on the results of a water test.

To speak intelligently regarding water treatment, ESPECIALLY on a well where you have to make water SAFE and then decide if you want to make the water nice, you need to get a comprehensive water test from a certified independent lab.

You want to test for hardness, iron (ferrous and ferric), manganese, pH, nitrates, bacteria, TDS, copper, sodium, arsenic at minimum.

Living on a well you should gave been testing annually for at least nitrates and bacteria for your safety.

With the water test results and the # of people in the home, # of bathrooms, plumbing diameter at softener installation location, and SFR we can make some recommendations.

Yes, we are probably way overdue for a comprehensive water test. And a new system. I'll add that to the list of things for DH to take responsibility for. LOL. Thanks.

Water conditioner is the natural, non chemical solution for hard water problems. It is best to soft the hard water.
