They do make dark brown travertine. Try going with a dark Noce or dark Walnut travertine.

Thank you-- we've looked at those but would like to have the floors even darker than those two. Have you ever tried to stain travertine?

I have never stained travertine. How dark do you want the tile? Have you tried using a color enhancing sealer on one of the darker travertine tiles? This will darken up the tile.

We were hoping to have them almost as dark as dark brown wood floors. We've tried a concrete stain but not a color enhancing sealer.

Try the color enhancing stone sealer. The concrete sealer will not darken it, it keeps the color the same, but the enhancer will darken it. I'm trying to see if I can find a photo to show you the difference.

We stained travertine for a wall mural and it worked great. As for a floor I would buy some pieces any try different methods of coloring the stones.

Have you thought of using a different material? Like porcelain tile in the colour you are hoping for? Travertine is traditionally a rather light, peach/pink/cream/salmon colour. That's part of its charm. If you want a deep chocolate/espresso coloured tile then you are working with the "wrong" material...try finding tiles that start out in those colours.

Mexican Saltillo tiles start of much darker and they can be stained many different colours of brown...they even have stains specific to the material. A stain enhancing sealer is then used to get an even deeper colour.

If that doesn't work, a dark coloured porcelain tile in a "wood look" pattern that comes in the deep brown you are looking for.

This is a very old thread now! Do you have any idea as to what kind of stain could be used to stain travertine grey? Maybe even in a shower?
