I have a chair just like that one! I found it at a yard sale. the woman I bought it from said she found "this old chair" in her grandfathers attic and she sold it to me for $2.50 !!!! It had bright orange corduroy fabric on it. I had it reupholstered in a burgundy velvet in the 90's and am thinking of updating the fabric again. This chair sits in my foyer under an antique clock that was my grandfather's. Everyone that comes in the house comments on what a "great" chair it is!

Wingback, I love the entire chair. The picture signifies exactly the redo. The style is one of my favorites. I personally enjoy stepping outside the box with different fabrics. After all, it is only fabric and can be reupholstered again and again. A job well done.

I have a newer chair like that and used fabric with subtle alligators in it. Whimsy and classic like that paisley is always in style.

Both chairs shared same elements in pattern, colors and overall style. I wish you'd have taken more risk. The only thing that makes the after chair stand out is a slightly more boho touch. I think it would look fabulous if you'd taken that path further, unless that is not the style you're going for.

im not kidding..I wore that paisly to a school dance circa 1969..it was bell bottom pants & halter ..cotton sateen..wonder now if I was as unattractive as that chair

This is one case where I would say painting the wood would be a good idea. It looks drab with the lively paisley. I would chose a color from the print and just go for it.

I thought the paisley was the outdated one... . May because of the lighting and awkward location? Hmmm...

I would paint the chair the yellow tone in the fabric. Looks great as is, but the yellow would make it pop.

I was given an old chair and decided to tackle the update myself. Refinishing the wood part was easy enough but the upholstery part was much more difficult than I thought. But it did turn out great. I get lots of compliments. I love the updated looks for these antique chairs.

Scharlie, you did a GREAT job. The chair looks fantastic! I love the paisley fabric, too. My question on the other chair--what should a reupholstery job on a chair like this run (in round figures, of course)? I am not so adept at redos that I would attempt a job like this, so I would need to pay someone else to redo (I scour Craigslist for "finds" that might need a little sanding here, some stain and seal there). Thanks.

Love the great fabric and while I understand some other's suggestions of painting the wood, I kind of enjoy the combo of "old" wood and contemporary fabric. Well done!

Antiques Roadshoe appraisers would shudder at the thought of painting the wood!

Painting the wood does take away any value the chair may have. But sometimes it is better to enjoy what you have than to be concerned about the value.

That fabric is great and is so versatile. I purchased the same fabric at Hobby Lobby and covered my kitchen barstools and made a matching valance to go over the top of the shutters in the room. It looks great!

love it actually i like both of them lol...about painting chair wood--if you dont plan on selling it and want to enjoy it I would paint, stain, do whatever you want...like the lady who bought the chair for $2.50 I would think she increased the value anyhow...I love seeing redo's like this!!

The chair looks beautiful! the paisley is not an ordinary paisley because of the size of the print. I would not have painted the chair, it looks elegant! it has a jewel effect. I love looking at redoes like this.

Hard to tell which is the before or after. Looks like the paisley is the new one. The fabric pattern is too busy for the style of chair IMO

Nice job, the paisley is pretty. Although the yellow trim seems to catch my eye first and cause a "framing" effect of the chair back. I would have used matching double welt cord to trim the edges of the chair or a darker colored pre-made trim to blend with the wood of the chair.
