Well I like that the first brings in color which seems to tie in with your wall plates.
The second has an interesting complement/ echo with shape of your chair backs....what do you like about each?

You comments are what I like about each. I'm going to try to find a rug the incorporates both color and design. I don't really like the traditional design of the red one. I want a more transitional look, but I have to consider my husband, who is a bit traditional in taste.

I opened two windows so I could see the pro's choice and I like it.
If that a black lampshade this grey fits dressy look and allows shape of chairs to be more highlighted [than a busy rug].
I don't know how your earthy plates would go though, sorry....
