You definitely need a backsplash. After weeks or months of wiping down the counters, the paint on the wall is going to get worn away. I feel there's nothing better than a white subway tile for a classic look with your black counters and wood cabinets and floor. It's very inexpensive so use it to fill in the complete wall, without leaving awkward untiled areas. Here's an example of what I mean. The tiles can be very long and thin or more squarish, but lay them in a brick pattern with a slightly darker grey grout to make the grid lines show up nicely.

Thanks so much Cynthia. I thought about that, but didn't know about the white on black, but sounds like it will go well. I'm starting to think that the tiny 2 inch backsplash tiles are going to be out of style in a few years because they are so busy. Subway makes more sense. Thanks again!
