The two things are actually different issues. If you live in an area where you can lease solar panels and return power to the grid, thus getting a credit, solar panels might actually pay for themselves eventually. However, with leaky windows, you are still going to be wasting energy. Getting a home energy audit (by someone who doesn't make money from your choices) might be a good idea. Many utilities or municipalities offer them free.

Last time I checked PG &E no longer did free audits for residences.

Our power bill has been greatly reduced by the new pool pump we added last year. Normally around $120 jumping to $300 in the summer. We also mainly use propane heat (average $120/month, since we do an even pay) and barely ever turn on the forced air. Propane isn't the greatest for heating the whole house. I am thinking going over to pellet would give a better heat for the winter.

Just wondering from those that have made the switch to solar if it was worth it. If they would do it again. Since we aren't spending $800 or more as others in our area do, payback would be a longer period. Also don't believe pge buys back excess power for much. (definitely not retail)
