The first things we should have learned on this site are not to get off the subject and to keep the string impersonal and to the point. The blue green carpet is a good foil for several color schemes, here is just one: white or pale, neutral grey green walls, white, blue and green furnishings and at least one painting (see kimberlysc's suggestions) in white, blue and green with a splash of red, echoed in accents like cushions and ornaments etc. There is a lot of very professional and positive input here. The green and red cushions which Dana found are great as are the color schemes shown by Paola Martin.

Hi Dana, have you thought about purchasing a large rug to anchor the new couch and chairs on the large expanse of green carpet? It will also break up the green and possibly lighten the look. A rug that compliments both the carpet and new couch, while lightening the flooring, would add some real dimension to the space...and with little cost.

The FP is in a pretty useless location unless you want to arrange a sitting area back in that under-stair nook. Try your print chair there, angled toward the FP with a floor lamp in the right corner. You could put the child's rocker under the stairs and add a low bookcase on the wall perpendicular to the FP for a quiet getaway reading spot. Your new couch is very formal with the tufted back, and does not feel comfortable with the other furnishings or the oak trim, which tend to set a more country casual feeling Is there a formal living room where the new sofa and the more formal walnut/mahogany corner entertainment center could fit in better? If not, and you really prefer the more formal look of the sofa, then I'd be planning to paint the trim white, make the staircase more formal with white spindles and black handrail, and upgrade the overall style of the room to a dressier look that makes the sofa work. If you got an awesome deal on a piece that complicates the situation, you haven't really accomplished your goal. It is pretty but doesn't look comfortable or casual enough for a relaxed TV/family room.

The sofa's rounded line reminds me of the spiral staircase which is a nice thing. I looked for a rug, but the chair especially brings another set of colors into the mix. I like the idea of trying the chair by the fire, and behind the sofa.... you?

I agree with moving the fireplace. Is the TV cabinet/armoire attached to the wall? If not, have you considered moving it to the corner where the fireplace is. Then, switch placement of the fireplace with it. Then rotate the couch to face the other direction. This will help with the lines in the room and make the S-curve of the stairs flow into your living room with the curvature of your couch. Your room seems large enough to do this. I'd then place one of the chairs next to the fireplace as a sitting area. (Hope this makes sense!)

If the entry [or main traffic] comes into the room and sees the back of the sofa, not sure that's the worst thing - after all there might be room for a piece or two as a welcome/ for interest.

You could say your tv unit could be a nice repeat of the soft tone in your new sofa. Right now it's the only thing that dark, is it?

I wouldn't add any color on the living room unit because you already have greens there. Could clash. A neutral is better.

Wow, your room looks so much better already! I agree with and like the idea of painting the TV unit and built-in cabinet a neutral gray/greige/taupe. I would do an area rug in a shade of beige to tie in the floral chairs and the honey color of the wood.

Your poor fireplace is definitely situated in an unfortunate location. What if you moved your seating configuration to the other side of the room? Do you have a flat screen tv that you could mount over the fireplace? I personally would prefer to look at the pretty spiral staircase and fireplace rather than that door and bare corner. You could keep the tv cabinet there for storage (painted, of course). I would also consider painting at least the doors and fireplace some color other than oak (the gray of the cabinet, or a shade of white). Not every piece of wood needs to match; my house is 100 years old and has some natural wood and some painted white. I don't think it's strange at all, and I think your room would really benefit from less of the oak. No need to paint the stairs or rails, but the doors and fireplace would look much nicer lightened up. Maybe your bay window frame/trim too, and your little tables. I know that's a lot of painting, and I understand if you don't want to. Just my opinion.

Also, I really like the couch you chose! Good job on getting great deal on it! Can't wait to see your completed room; you've come a long way already!

If it stays where it is [as opposed to moving across the room] it could have some color variation - there's no pattern or color nearby is there?

Won't she have to sand/prime the tv cabinet? The doors and fireplace wouldn't be nearly as much work to paint as the stairs and rails; THAT would be quite a project! It only has to be a light sanding for the primer to adhere. I think it would be so worth it.

I can only copy/paste what's on her website which said no priming or sanding / shrugging my shoulders a bit.... others have recommended it highly. Maybe it's expensive.... yes the spindles a lot.

I found this thread because I have similar issues. Green carpet and walls and medium brown trim that I don't want to change. I'm trying different rugs and currently auditioning this one and thought it might work for your space.

Chris, do you mean a rug in tone like the wall-to-wall, but with a pattern that meshes with new sofa? Like yours - an Oriental rug....?

everdebz, I dont have my own thread but maybe I'll start one. Thanks for that idea! As for what I was meaning with the rug suggestion, I was thinking an area rug to "define" the seating area and pick colors that work with what she has and brings in what she wants. In my case I have a lot of beigey-green in an 80's house with honey oak and am trying to bring some more contemporary colors but with a somewhat traditional patterned rug. Pick one with pattern. My square one curls at some corners, hate that! I think round. Pick colors from room, art, or chair cushions, curtains, lamps, tea pot. Find your colors. Post the spot again. I hope this helps.
