Hi House2514! I love Maureen's example just above! You could almost copy that since your pillow fabric is so similar. When you get to that point, please post pics of fabrics you are considering for chairs and you'll get lots of help/opinions. Also, having accessible beige myself, I think the blues will be beautiful with that wall color.

I'd probably get chairs with a subtle pattern like blue or tan ticking stripe. I also like how this room has a pop of solid blue with the ottoman. You could do the same by incorporating solid blue accent pillows (or even a blue ottoman).

Hi, great choices.... my thoughts...I think you could definitely go with pattern for the chairs, just vary the pattern sizes/shape between the two. That will give you a nice look. :) If blue is a color you love, then I think you will be good for a long time with your choice. Good luck! :) It really depends what you like. :)

I love the idea of patterned chairs that will be complimented by the toss pillows, not vice - versa.
Go to website for ARKFabrics and looked all their color boards for various blues that you consider. They have great way of merchandising their fabric, so,it is very inspiring.
You have to get just the correct combo of prints and stripes or textures, to make it work, but I think it will be easy.

So, what does the media console look like? Sounds like the corner wood piece will definitely stay in the room, right? The other wood piece could move?

Ann-LOL- was just trying to contact you- yes console is going directly in front of sofa on opposite wall- two chairs- like you suggested earlier on either side. Corner piece was my mothers and cant fit anywhere else in house- secretary I think will go because I think I will need an end table with lamp----MANY MANY THANKS

ZAZFUZZROC- Did not know if I should stay with dark piece of wood- thats what I mean by matching. I really would like a distressed white because one day I really want to move to coast to be closer to my daughter and new and only grandchild---this way I could easily convert over to beach cottage chic which is what I really love!!!! Now, I am trying to make do with mixing a little traditional with it. Thank you so much!

Ann- no pics going to look at what they have but while hubby is in the the mood to buy I MUST get something-lol

Since your room will be mostly grey and beige, I suggest doing the chairs in a light blue print similar to that on the pillows for interest and dimension.

Ann- going to do at least a 50 inch tv or maybe a little large- so it has to be somewhere between 64-70 inches long and not too low- I am more concerned over if its ok to go with a painted piece rather than wood stain.

I'm thinking it's fine to have the dark wood in the same room as distressed white. But, maybe you'd need something else dark in the room to make your mother's corner piece make sense. Also, I don't think you'd want one side of the room with all light furniture and the other side with dark pieces. So, maybe you'd need to find a way to get something dark to the chair side of the room for better balance.

Have you considered a lighter wicker armchair? This one gives you a different texture with the option of leaving the neutral cushions or recovering them.

So, if you scroll back and look at Maureen's example, you could buy chairs like those with dark legs to bring some dark wood over to the TV side of the room. Also, I'm thinking your chairs might need small side tables. If you look at Zaz's first pic, see the little round dark metal side table. That could be another way to bring dark tones to that side of the room.

I like your furniture choices and color scheme, but I 'm puzzled by the 3 wall openings. I feel placing the new sofa in front of these openings will always look very odd from both rooms. Could you add something like plantation shutters to cover the openings? Paint them the same color as the walls and don't hang any art over the sofa for a more solid backdrop for the sofa. Is there absolutely no option to place the sofa out into the room away from that wall?

janiehburton- Have been baffled over these openings for years-not my choice-moved into hubbys house when we married,LOL- They use to be even worse with little picket fence railings in between openings and Houzzers told me and also kitchen guys that did remodel in their to knock them out- there are more going out of room and in dining room- very little wall space in this room and no other options- but thank you for your suggestions and interest- when I get done will post pics so you can see.

why not box in those openings. They are strangely obsession inducing, but I can see they are a problem. it like having the worse of the open concept and the worse of separate rooms.

Have you ever seen bookcases with pictures hung on the shelf dividers? Ex.

I think you should treat the wall openings like the columns of a bookcase and hang a picture directly in the center. Otherwise, they detract from anything you put in front of them. Essentially you would treat it like a solid wall with a large piece of art above the sofa.

To help with your media console selection, I always buy what I love and figure out how to make it work later. I hate when furniture looks like it's bought as a set so definitely mix and match finishes. I would however replace the secretary with an end table and table lamp.

I think you are off to an amazing start.. I would go with either a textured seude in the blue tones in the pillow or...a complimenting ikat fabric...

As far as the suggestions on wall openings- will work with furniture when delivered and see what I can do- this is a small sofa than the one I had so may be possible to have it face the fireplace. If I were to do anything, I would have the columns removed but have already looked into that and we are talking big $$$$$ and then run into changes with hardwood floors already down. I will post the four walls of room when everything gets here and look forward to your suggestions. I didn't realize there was a fireplace. That will be great to see the whole room and see if there are any additional furniture arrangement possibilities. Should be a fun week for you, getting new furniture!

Ann- sorry- I just thought you might have seen this long ago when houzzer's told me to paint mantle to draw out grout color and paint the brass fireplace screen----still need to frame the canvas and not sure on these candlesticks that decorator chose but guess they will do until I fall in love with something. I will end up doing a roman shade on door to deck and maybe a half drape pulled to the right of window ?????

Next is the wall going out of the room into foyer- now you can see the openings I am dealing with- the next one is where new media cabinet and two chairs will go- only solid wall in room

Hi house2514, Did you have any luck with your console purchase? :) I definitely understand your dilemma with the room. The first three smaller openings....I thought they added a bit of detail to the room, but now I see.... with the others it adds quite the challenge in decorating.

Oh, I think I do remember the fireplace from a previous dilemma. With the cutouts, I think the best thing to do is "float" your furniture about 2 feet in from those walls with cutouts. Then, I don't think there will be an issue with them.

Ann, no luck yesterday with media console- going back out today- sofa is being delivered on saturday and we will put down the new rug- I did have a wonderful lady at a small decorators market that helped me with choice fabric of chairs and they are lots of nice options.

I 100% agree with Ann on floating your furniture. In fact I might position the sofa to face the fireplace and the two chairs opposite the media console. If the sofa faces the fireplace, I'd put a sofa table or desk behind the sofa so it's appealing from the entry. Sorry. I didn't realize you had two walls of openings. I'd treat the room much like an open space. I'd also get matching shades for your window and door.

er612----Thank you for suggestions- problem is from opening to room and hearth of fireplace is just 14 feet- but I will try it facing just to see- then I have the issue of having to turn to watch tv on right wall- I think I need a new house-LOL

Ha. How wide is the room? I actually think 14ft is plenty of space (depending on how wide the room is). Also, what are your sofa's dimensions?

I like the console! If the sofa faces the fireplace, I would place the current tv stand/drop leaf table behind the sofa. Keeping this piece in the room will help mix the finishes. I find blending to be a breeze if every finish appears at least twice (ex. your mother's corner cabinet and the drop leaf table - If the drop leaf table doesn't stay in the room, I would add a dark wood end table).

I just have to ask, do you walk through those various openings to short cut, or do you walk around the entire wall?

Honestly, if it were my house, instead of wanting to remove the walls with the cutouts, I would try to have some of them closed up. All you need to do is put some. 2 x 4's up in them and attach drywall to seamlessly match the existing walls. It could be done pretty easily, and then repaint the walls.
This would give you such a fresh start on your room decorating. Would your husband even consider that?

sunnydrew- maybe if we were younger-LOL- but you have to be here to really get true concept- if openings were closed up would be a very dark house- Maybe when everything else is done- would remove some and just have it all open. When I finish this room the next project is two bathrooms!
