Depends on what look you are going for. What look do you want? The counter tops seem a different shade of blue than backsplash tiles...? If the blue tones clash I would look at painting the counter tops. Then the cabinets are pretty neutral so you could do some color on the walls. You could pull a color from the tiles for the walls. (cannot tell from pic what colors are in those).

White cabinets and more blue on the walls. A darker blue in the same shade that it there.

I would paint the cabinets white as well. That color backsplash would look best with either white or dark espresso cabinetry. If you go with white cabinets, be sure to pick a paint color close to that off your dishwasher for a cohesive look. When budget allows down the road, I would change out your countertops for a gray or gray & white stone. Look into granite or quartz.

I wouldn't paint your walls yellow. Let the blue be your accent color, and stick with neutral walls (especially since you have an open concept space).

We were leaning toward painting the countertops white, Darzy...it's nice to get an outside opinion. Yes, Jayme - the countertops and backsplash are completely different colors. I've heard about painting countertops using the Rust-O-leum product, but I've heard so many mixed things about the paint chipping, etc. I wonder if anyone has experience here with painting them? I read somewhere that a few coats of poly help with this. I am loving the feedback! Thank you!

Paint your ceiling pale sky blue, IF that would work in your living area as well? Replace the countertops or paint them with one of the rustoleum products to match your backsplash better. Paint the bottom cabinets the cobalt blue, and either paint the uppers a white or leave them natural wood. One thing that seems to stand out to me is the window trim. It seems that they should be the same color as the upper cabinets, whatever you decide to do. Either stain the uppers darker, or lighten the window trim.

I agree to paint the counters. One of our Houzzer friends here says the rustoleum works great on the counters. BTW, I've read that light blue is not the best kitchen color because it suppresses the appetite so I'd stick with cobalt or navy for accessories.

For your window treatments..

I don't know about the counter top paint, but would research that for sure. Unless u r a BIG blue fanatic, I would not paint the walls blue, personally I think it would overpower things. Neutral greys r wonderful and can be used in any rooms nicely. A little hardware on the cabinetry would help.

As someone else mentioned, it appears that the countertop is a different color from the backsplash. I know that you said that you like the backsplash. I do as well; however, only if it complements the rest of the kitchen. If the aqua countertops are quartz or a high end material, you might choose to keep them and instead change out the backsplash (a less expensive alternative that could also look great if you choose a new backsplash that complements the other design/color choices). I think sticking with one accent color or eye-popping statement is ideal. You can make either the countertops or the backsplash work...but not both if they are from 2 different color families.

Interesting that judyg found a potential window treatment with both colors and a similar pattern. I wonder if it can tie the two together ...if yes, I would likely paint the cabinets white or off white to match as well as window trim!

the countertops are a completely different color. They are aqua and do not tie into the backsplash at all.

Do you have any close-up photos of the backsplash and countertops? What are the countertops made of? Are the cabinets whitewashed or pickled oak?

Here is a close-up. I believe the cabinets are beech. The countertops are laminate.

I can't tell if you have maple cabinetry. If you do, you don't want to use a dark stain. The darkest you'd want to go would be a honey stain. If you really want to keep the tile and you don't mind painting the cabinetry, here's what I'd do:
1. paint the window trim white
2. paint the cabinets white
3. add a mixture of cabinetry hardware/pulls since you have so many cabinets!
4. add an island with a stone countertop
5. add a fun hanging light fixture over sink
6. paint the walls a color that complements the tile and the rest of your house

I love cobalt blue and light cabinets, but something is off about yours although a closer picture might help us. I have pale butter color on my walls in the main living spaces and I love it as it is cheery but still neutral. I agree to do something right away about the counter tops. If you paint them with Rust O'leaum, you can always replace them down the road. You might consider whitewashing the cabinets first to see if you like that. Also, minwax has colored wood stains which don't cover the grain. I am thinking blue stain for the bottom and white wash for the top cabinets. You have a lot of options here, so I'd think it through and test out color samples.

I would darken the cabinets to go with the floor and window trim. I would use a light gray for the walls. That will compliment your appliances and will go with blue. I would leave the window curtain less if you do not need privacy. I would use brushed silver cabinet hardware. Is this an eat in kitchen? If so I would get a round table with blue chairs. I would hang a large brushed nickel farmhouse fixture over the table. I think a white countertop with a little gray in it would look good.

If you decide to paint the window frame, be sure to seal the wood first, so that you do not get bleeding through where the knot holes are. It will come right through the paint.

I have lived in homes that needed changes on a budget. Much impact can be made with small and economical changes. Many homes today have varying woods, finishes, etc. Therefore, personally, unless I hated the cabinets I would work with them. The counter really needs to go either by painting or replacing in my thoughts. Any time you make changes it costs $. Retiling the backsplash, unless u do it, will cost some cash. Repainting the cabinets will take time if u do it yourself-and they don't look worn or old to begin with. The easiest seems to be countertops and wall color. Buying a neutral countertop can be fairly inexpensive if you get a regular counter and not fancy ones. But then there is installation involved, etc...again..$! If it were me, I would paint counters and walls and see how it looks, not a lot spent, and not much to lose.
