There's a lot of Sphagnum moss out there that's not very clean- leaves and sticks and stuff can grow mold. See if you can get New Zealand Sphagnum Moss- it's more consistent. Some pet stores carry it.

mildews in the garden thrive in mid summer.. when nights are hot.. humid.. and lack air movement ... i am kinda thinking winter in the house ... isnt the same ... and so wonder about other things????

You are probably over-watering. Let it dry out.

I agree with Jane. Try watering sphagnum moss once it is dry on top, but has some softness when you push.

Looks like mold to me. Can't you just pick it off?

It is mold but not a problem, other than due to overwatering. It is likely digesting some non-sphagnum debris and not a threat to the orchid. Molds are very host specific and it is merely cosmetic.

Yeah one time I bought some moss that had sticks in it. Often there are small leaves too. I have had good quality moss grow mold but it was in a terrarium with absolutely no ventilation and didn't dry out.
