Susan Louise

As of yesterday, my SL is finally recuperating from being grazed by deer for months (my DH put a cage around her). Not quite as nice blooms as Belle Portugaise, but a much smaller plant, and it repeats. Still has that elegant look.

Very pretty bloom, Jackie. Oh, how I wish I had roses blooming already. Enjoy! :)

Susan Louise is (for me) the one that won't establish. My average winters are just often too cold for it. When my past plants have bloomed, I've been so pleased with them. le sigh. The simple elegance of those petals.

Reality check, I could not get canes to get woody for anything. I think in eight years I got a pair of one year old canes one year. I did kill it three times. I even tried different methods of winter protection.

If I had a greenhouse (that could withstand my mountaintop winds), Susan Louise would live in the warmest corner with perfect sunlight and ideal soil.

anntn6b - I am not surprised, as Susan Louise is a tea rose, and thus likes warmer climates. It is a seedling of Belle Portugaise, which is a hybrid gigantica.

Tea and china roses are the consolation for those of us who live in climates which are too warm for old European roses, etc.

Mine got pretty big, too big for the spot I had reserved for it. Then it got PM, and it was outta here.
