troy bilt horse question

Went to check the transmission fluid today and noticed that it appears to be something other than 140 weight in there. Looks like 00 grease that is in Snapper mowers. Is this okay or do I need to clean it all out and replace with proper fluid? I do have 2 gallons of 140 weight GL-1 lube...

Not sure if GL-1 is good for brass gears. Maybe someone who knows for sure will chime in. If what's in there is real thick I'd get it all flushed out good and find what's right for it.

GL-1 is fine, it's the GL-5 that eats them. I just can't figure out why it has the thick grease in there, unless that was just a way to get out of replacing seals. I have started pulling the whole transmission apart so I can measure the wear on the shafts...have a feeling I am going to be spending some bucks on this jewel, but once I'm done, it should last the rest of my life lol

Most of the time heavy oil is a bad sign.I have a old tiller which is going to be restored to new.My new one works good.but the old one was handed down the family. They put thick oil in it to.

How do you KNOW that GL5 "eats" bronze parts? After hearing that a lot and wanting the authorative opinion of a professional I asked a lubrication engineer at one of the big oil companies.

What the guy told me is that there is only a potential problem with yellow metals at temperatures higher than would ever be encountered in a transmission.

Modern GL5 containers say they are for use in differentials and transmissions, and transmissions have yellow metal synchronizer friction surfaces.

I was just going by what I have read everywhere on the net...everywhere I looked all I heard was GL-5 eats yellow metal...after ya read it a few times, ya see it must be true. Being how these parts are getting scarce, I would rather not chance it.

    Snuffy,

One of the characteristics of forums like this one is that so many people on them are self-proclaimed "Experts". The less educated they are, the more they think they know. When asked what research their opinions are based on they look back at you and say "I just know", "Skeeter told me and he don't lie", etc.

One benefit of a college education is that it shows students what a big, complicated world we live in. We're lucky to be experts in the thing we do for a living and maybe a couple of hobby pursuits to boot.

There are professional lubrication specialists who are glad to help us. All we have to do is ask.

Also mentions this in the owners manuals and the shop manual....pretty sure they are not the uneducated redneck hicks you seem to be alluding to. College doesn't necessarily make a person any more intelligent. Seen plenty of so called educated people too stupid not to trip over their own shoelaces.
