Describe to us what potting material you are using?

I have not changed my soil basically, potting soil, cow manure, this plant did very well this summer. Brought it in, did well, left it alone decided to check it and the total stems down to the trunk was rotten, it it totally black, not sure what happened. Maybe I watered it too much.??? Should I check the roots or leave it along now that I have cut it back. ...Have not watered other adeniums, will wait until spring before watering again and put out when warm. Other adeniums are showing signs of new buds, through title would be spring before any signs of buds. Do they grow year round, other have no leaves

When a plant starts looking desperate, I always check the roots no matter what time of the year it is. If that particular one doesn't change in a week or two, you might have stopped whatever problem that was. If not, I will personally dig it up and check the roots.

In the kind of potting soil you are using, I would have stopped watering the plants long before I bring them in for the winter--maybe as much as a month before. Then kept them dry all through the winter. That substrate is too heavy and will not dry out fast enough to prevent root rot during the winter.

Some adeniums are finicky this way. Some of them go dormant when days get shorter, others keep trundling along throughout the winter and these are usually the ones that get killed by over-watering. I have plants sprouting new leaves and they get about half a cup of water every two weeks but ONLY BECAUSE they are in gritty mix. If I were using the kind of soil you have, I will probably not water them at all, leaves or no. This forces them into dormancy. Dormant plants are much easier to ignore during the winter.

I hope this helps. More experienced growers will have more knowledge on the subject, but this is what I do to keep things simple.
