Saving Onion Seed

Last spring I picked a few of the best onions I had in storage and planted them (in my GH, season too short here to reliably get seed outside). They grew well and flowered. I picked the flower heads as they dried, and then brought them indoors to finish drying.

I am wondering how best to finish cleaning the seeds which were produced. I rubbed the seedheads between my hands to separate the seed. I suppose I should winnow them somehow. Anything else? Can onion seed be washed or float tested quickly or will that cause problems with its dormancy?

Anyone know how this should be done?
