Adam, I don't have photos of it, but Malmaison suffered from mildew here quite badly when grown in a pot. If mildew is an issue in your climate, water stressing the plant is a sure-fire way to force it to mildew. It's much better in the ground where the roots can spread as far as needed and the plant has a steadier, more reliable source of moisture. It gets very hot here and the soil in pots heats up, stressing the potted roses quickly and often rather badly. Malmaison is a rose which definitely suffers in those conditions. Kim

I've had two in pots for close to two years now, one own-root and one on Fort. They both bloom in heavy flushes continually throughout the year. Oddly, the own- root is so far a larger bush and heavier bloomer than the one on Fort, which is not the general rule here. Roses generally do better on Fort for me. I love this rose. It has no mildew, very little blackspot or problems with balling here in central Florida. It's a compact, nicely leafed out bush.

I grow mine in a very small container. I decided to keep it small. However, SDLM gets black spots and mildew but the blooms are so beautiful and romantic. I really love this rose, because of those blooms and the history attached to it. Intitally, the blooms were white in the first year, now, this year, I can see some light marshmellow pink colour to it. Worth keeping despite the diseases.

Here is Souvenir de la Malmaison planted in a plastic wine barrel. In this picture, it is 2 years old from a small band-sized plant.

I ordered a band size from Burling in 2017 first planted in a 5 gal container and it bloomed well in 2018.

Later I repotted it into a plastic wine barrel. I insist you drill as many holes as you can. The bottom of these wine barrels can become quite anaerobic and may cause issue with roots.

After losing this plant to post-pandemic woes, I have restarted again and will be using the same pot.

Kim -- Didn't make any difference in our conditions. No matter what you did with it, it mildewed like mad, AND blackspotted.

We tried 3 different plants. Own root. Budded. That rose is simply basura here. Others had the same problem.
