Root pruning Chicago Hardy fig in January?

Hello,

I'm new to this forum and to figs. I have a Chicago Hardy fig that I've had growing in a container for 3 years. I have read that root pruning a fig ever 3 years or so is a good idea. My problem is, if I do any root pruning, it has to be now, in January as I will be gone from my home until late April. Is it too early to prune now??

I understand I will need to remove the bottom third of the root ball and any large tap roots. Any other pointers??

Many have there own way of root pruning .
Here is an example that have been doing for many years and works fine.
The picture below shows an almost finished root pruning.

Whats not quite done is the wedges(1 shown) and the cuts going straight down from top of rootball down to bottom which will overall make the circumference smaller going back into pot and then back filling the voids.

What i use is a reciprocating saw with a 9 inch wood pruning blade.
In this order i start ,
some is cut of from top of root ball, bottom of root ball, then wedges around the root ball are made.
Finally straight down cuts from top to bottom not shown in picture are made.
