Hi there

I am a complete gardening novice. We have recently moved into a house that has an established garden, except for the hedge?? It looks like someone planted pheballium plants with a view to growing a hedge and then just left them. I now have a row of tall (about 15 feet) thin and wispy plants. Is it possible to turn these into a shorter, bushier hedge? Do I just keep cutting them down to the height I want?

I do not know this plant but in order to renovate an overgrown hedge you need to cut it lower than the height you want. Otherwise it will grow vigorously from the top and the bottom will become 'leggy'. The following advice is for the UK where it is fine to cut hedges mid-Winter and there is hedge and wildlife legislation to consider. But the principles will be the same.
