Help! Sound break tree ideas for central oklahoma

Hello all,

I have land in central Oklahoma along a highway and thinking about building on it. The highway noise is tolerable but would like to plant a tree (assumably a fur) between the road and my property for privacy and a sound break. I have been doing research yet many sites contradict each other. I can help with these questions though....

Desired time? Slow is ok (I read fast growing trees die faster and are weak for the long run...ie I read leyland Cyprus is a bad choice)

Cost? There will be a budget, these trees are solely to keep out noise and provide privacy. Doesn't need to be fancy. I will be planting a lot!

Location? The land is in central Oklahoma, we do have freezes, ice storms, droughts etc.... I do have plenty of room for growth.

    It is hard to recommend specific trees without knowing what sort of soil you have---rocky/caliche clay? sandy loam? dense red clay? Some trees that would grow well in one type might not grow well in another, so some description of your soil would help us to suggest some trees for an acoustical barrier. Also, do you have a water source available to water trees and help them to get established? Do you know if your soil is acidic, neutral or alkaline?

    The Oklahoma Forestry Service has some great tree seedlings available for purchase by landowners to use for conservation, windbreak, wildlife and restoration purposes. I'll link the tree ordering portion of their website below. I think the list of tree seedlings they have available would be a good starting point for you. They have both hardwoods and evergreens. Of course, in order for the trees to be affordable, they are small, but it does give you a nice, affordable option. In halfway-decent soil and with irrigation to get them off to a good start the first year or two, the small ones will grow faster than you think after they get their root system established.

    You'll get the best result in terms of blocking noise if you have your acoustical barrier planting as multiple rows (not strictly in straight rows either, unless you are constrained by space) 2-3 deep instead of one single row of trees planted in a straight row.

    If I was planting for a sound barrier, I'd probably try to have 2 or 3 different heights of trees, planted in clumps more so than in straight lines or rows, and would have both hardwoods and evergreens.

    I'd avoid the use of Eastern red cedar trees as they burn like mad and are a horrible fire risk as well as being incredibly invasive.

    On the OFS website, you will find some trees sold bareroot and others sold in long, skinny containers. Elsewhere on the OFS website, they have tree selection guides, including a couple written for central OK.

    I second Dawns advice on not using eastern red cedar. Magnolia might be an option.

    We planted over 500 trees at my sons place last year that came from OFS and I thought they were quite nice. The evergreens seem to grow awfully slow, so you might want to mix them in with other trees so you have a barrier earlier. We planted for windbreak, erosion control, nitrogen fixation, wildlife habitat, and some human food, but mostly just to improve the land. You have to order in groups of 50 and I think with a minimum of 100 total, but they are low cost. Some States, like Missouri, let you order as few as 10 of one kind. It's a great program when you need a lot of trees. Hope you have a tractor with an auger, or at least a power auger.

    I second the idea of a power auger to speed up the planting of a lot of trees. If you don't own one, you can rent one. Be sure to call and get any underground utilities marked before you start digging! You never know where pipelines, electric lines, water lines and fiber-optic cable lines may be buried.
