When growing an avocado from a seed, you'd plant it once it has rooted and sprouted--from the seed. It needs its seed to help it while it grows into the soil.

My brother lucked onto a dwarf form that he grows in a pot on his patio by planting from a seed, started in the usual manner by sticking toothpicks in it and suspending it in a little cup of water until it sprouted, then he transplanted to soil. My mom and sister have successfully grown avocado saplings by putting the seeds out in the compost pile in June, outdoors. But the trees needed to be brought in before the first killing frost.

I don't know if an avocado can be successfully grown from a softwood cutting or not, but we keep searching seeds from the avocadoes we eat for one that sprouts like my brother's dwarf.

According to what I read (my avocado died) is that avocado grown from seed might not fruit at all. They are not true to type. Jackie French says she grows avocado from seed though. And cultivars are restricted in size a seed grown avocado can be huge, bigger than any walnut tree, maybe more the size of an oak tree. Seed grown avocados need a lot of time to fruit. If you buy an avocado you would have a known frost hardiness too.

It may root, but you wasted a seed. If your intent was to trick the seed into giving you two sprouts, you may be disappointed. You would have been better off waiting until the tree stabilized before taking a cutting.
