This is an addiction! Had my final list and was cutting way back this year. But reading reviews of the new dwarf varieties, I had to try them. So in addition to my original list:

Dester, Cherokee Purple, Russian 117, Giant Green, Lillian's Yellow Heirloom, Casino Chip and Dwarf Summetime Gold.

I am adding 4 additional dwarfs: Rosella Crimsom, Dwarf Purple Heart, Summertime Green and Dwarf Sweet Scarlett.

I have grown Summertime Green, Dwarf Sweet Scarlett, Rosella Crimsom and Summertime Gold. But Dwarf Purple Heart will be new to me. I called my source for dwarf plants and reserved these.

Want to try Ananas Noire, but that will be next year.

Red Tumbling Tom followed me home a few days ago. It was in a basket planter, I potted it up to an 8 or so gallon coir basket planter.

I thought I was buying a Sweet 100 last year, but it was mis-marked. It turned out to be a Tumbling Tom and produced well for me.

That is a nice follower, Nate. hehe.

I like the idea of a hanging basket cherry tomato IFF(if and only if) it is dwarf and can be managed.

Ananas Noire is also one of favorites. I got the seeds from a store bought heirloom tomato. I have no idea what the names was, until late August that I saw somebody posting pictures of it sliced. I think so far 5 peoples have showed AN in theirs grow list , including you and me.
My other favorite is Cherokee Purple. This year I am growing close to 20 new varieties. Hopefully some of them will become repeats. I pick my new varieties after an exhaustive sifting through many reviews by the growers in this forum. I cannot go by what just the seeds sellers say about them.

So anyway, I got AN by just an accident.

Seysonn, My garden is in a community garden with a lot of very experienced and experimental gardeners--not me :). My original Ananas Noir tomato was handed to me by one of the gardeners who is a master gardener. I wasn't very impressed by the way it looked on the outside but when I sliced it, WOW!! Chartreuse and magenta, plus it is delicious. Last year I gave away a lot of my extra AN starts but nobody seems as wowed by it as I am.

Cherokee Purple is one that most of my fellow community gardeners like but the one time I grew it the plant put forth a few puny tomatoes then bit the dust... probably due to my lack of skill but ease of growing puts a tomato variety at the top of my list. I can already see that the Joe Pesch tomato (Peace Seeds) will not be a good one for me. It took the seeds a long long time to germinate and the seedlings are weak compared to the others... Hopefully there will be a post at the end of the season where we can all report back on our tomato successes and failures.

The Sweet 100 was purchased as a plant. The rest were winter sown and are in the ground now, looking good so far.

OK. Keep babying those seedlings. The weather is improving across the US of A. I have seen day temps (in temp maps) over 50F not too far from The north border. The south is cooking pretty good already.

Ann, I see you have Dester on your list. I grew it last year and it was a knockout for flavor and production. Is on my permanent list. Don't rule it out on the first production of fruit. It was just okay. It was excellent as the heat of summer set in. We loved it. I think a lot of tomatoes are like that. The fruits that set in cooler weather aren't as flavorful.

Yes, that is a good pic of Ananas Noir. I also liked your photo of Purple Heart, one I've never heard of. I'll grab that one if I see it for sale.

Jennie - yeah we are very BIG on canning in this house and all our supplies of tomato stuff are dry or getting there. Plus our family motto is you can never have to many tomatoes! We can things on a 3 year cycle and tomato production for canning the past 2 years was way down due to weather here.

So while fingers are crossed for this year's home pantry production, I also know that not all the plants will survive or do well and that the squirrels and the deer will find some way to get into the gardens. :)

Same here Dave. The last two years have been canning wastelands. Really, really need a good year this year but it is not looking good so far. I am learning more about coping with these conditions and getting a little better each year.

Spent 3 hours today potting up my maincrop tomatoes and chili peppers, the dwarfs and the cherries are already out in the cold frame. It was a good day!

ULIET (F1), anybody ?

I did a quick survey of this thread and didn't see anybody growing Juliet.
It is called "GRAPE" by shape/size but it is much bigger than grape. It
looks like a mini Roma to me. Actually Bonnie describes it as "Roma
Grape". And also , Bonnie lists it as one of the "All American Favorite"
tomatoes. Hmmm, then how come not many gardeners growing it ?

I have grown Juliet about 5 years ago. I remember that it was VERY
prolific and the taste was ok too. Some people grow it for canning
whole, like San Marzano.
Anyway, this was just a side note. I am not adding any more to my grow out list: THAT IS FINAL: hehe"

I grew Juliets a few years ago and really didn't care for them. The skins were VERY tough and no flavor otherwise. There are quite a few cherry tomatoes I like a whole lot better( Matt's Wild Cherry, Supersweet 100's and Black Cherry) and for canning I grow Romas.

About BFT, I had tough time germinating and ended up having just one.I look forward to seeing it fruit. It is still under light. I germinated it around 1st of March. It is doing fine.

I am pretty sure that you can find Brandywine, Mortgage Lifter, Better Boy, Big Boy, Big Beef, Sun Gold, and some other popular heirlomms and hybrids. But not Brandy Boy and some others.
You can try buying them by mail order.

I wasn't going to buy any more plants, but I saw a Big Rainbow last night and couldn't help myself. Fred Meyer also had Orange Strawberry, Black Prince, Black from Tula and a few other interesting heirlooms.

Yes, Fred Meyers garden centers have more varieties than Lowes and HD.
I've bough a few seedlings from them. This branch that I go to, is across the parking lot from HD. So there is some competition .

BTW: I grew Black from Tula and Big Rainbow from seed. And have them planted out already.
