new to Hampton Roads

Hello out there,

I left my gardens in Ohio for a new job in Virginia Beach. Had 100+ day lilies, as well as other perennials. Just bought a little ranch with a completely blank slate of a yard. Would love to chat with other gardeners around here.

If anyone knows of a local garden group and/or a plant swap, I'm all ears!

Hi Abbie-
Quite a change from Ohio. I live in Richmond. I have a medium sized, raised bed vegetable garden and am landscaping a small house I have lived in for 7 months now, which, I swear, did not have a single plant other than weeds or grass on the property. Good luck to you. I do know you are more temperate than we are and have a few more options in terms of choices.

Hello to you, both! We just bought a house with a yard full of the strangest shrub combos. Should be an interesting summer of figuring out what other odd things have been planted there.

Hi Abbie! Sorry I'm late to the party here, but I live in Hampton and, ironically enough, I'm from Ohio. I think you’ll find there are a lot more things you can grow here that you couldn't grow in Ohio! Any way, welcome to Virginia!

We used to have a Plant Cycle group, but it fizzled out a few years back. I don't know of anything else unfortunately.

Hi Abbie! Welcome to our humble state...lol. (Hi to Sara, too!! Long time no talk!) I, too, live in Hampton.......almost "down the street" from Sara. I dont know of any groups or swaps...maybe check out Craigs List??? Hope u like Va Beach. Sounds like ur in the "country" part, which is nice!!

Note to Sara: PC crashed, lost all addresses. Changed mine from Verizon but if u still have old one, its almost the same. just add 24 after my name (and before the "@") and use gmail.com. Would love to hear from u! I'm much better now :) Rode down ur street one day but forgot where house was...lol.

Hi Abbie! Welcome to the sunny south! I'm in VB as well, so maybe we can talk shop sometime. Groups are hard to find here, I've found, outside the very clique-y garden clubs in the 'Old VB' neighborhoods. We may just have to start our own...

Cat - Thanks for the note! That sounds like a good idea but I can't tackle it this summer -- we just bought a house and I have tons to do there. But maybe next spring??

Welcome to coastal Virginia. It's a great place to garden. Visit the Norfolk Botanical garden through the seasons to see the variety of plants that do well here. Hi Abbie--I was born in Norfolk, lived for 25 years in Richmond (Henrico, actually), now live and garden here in Mathews County...sort of halfway between Richmond and VA Beach.

Abbie, I bought a home in Norfolk about 25 years ago and promptly filled it with perineal plants. Now I desperately want to find a "new" gardener to donate lots of plant material to, including lots of day lilies. Are you interested?
