Needing a new cherry for 2015

My small tomato last summer was the SunGold. I loved it (just like all your reviews)...but my wife thought it degraded too fast (not a good keeper). So I am looking for a replacement this year. I am thinking maybe Black Cherry. Here is what I hope for: medium sized cherry/grape, indeterminate, vigorous and good tasting. Your thoughts??? thanks

Black Cherry fits the bill. I tried to skip growing it in 2014 and my wife was put out! You probably already know this, but Black Cherry's main fault is that it is not quite as productive as some other cherries. So, plant a little more than you would of another kind. My wife and I will sometimes stand on either side of a plant and just eat all the ripe fruit, while we're catching up on the day!

It's going to be hard to top Sungold hybrid cherry tomato .... but, Black Cherry sounds like an delicious choice! It has been used a breeding stock for many interesting tomatoes.

    Keeps well ... maybe:

Another cherry tomato whose genetics have been sought by breeders, is an early yellow cherry tomato that keeps well,Galina (a.k.a. Galina's Yellow).

A decent sized red one, also earlier, is the 4' indeterminate Baxter's Early Bush Cherry Tomato (a.k.a. Baxter's Bush Cherry)

Then, there is Sweet Baby Girl, a .hybrid

    So many choices ;-)

thanks for the great suggestions! I really do love the Sungold....but, If mama ain't happy...ain't nobody happy!

If you haven't given Gardeners Delight a chance your missing, IMO, the best of the Cherry varieties

I am also zapping Sungold for the same reason, SHORT RIPE life, cracking ....
I have found heirlooms that are bigger. Last year I grew a red variety that I liked (No name) I am going to grow it again plus some bigger yellow ones and some mini roma.

Here is a picture . I got them from Trader Joes, as "Heirloom" But probably they are just OP.

I have saved seeds from larger yellow ones, red ones and the brown ones.

" my wife thought it degraded too fast (not a good keeper)"

I didn't know that cherry toms were allowed to last overnight, or is "good keeper" an hourly metric? I can't remember one single instance where there was a single tomato still inside the house come dawn...

Last spring someone gave me two seedings of Snow White. The flavor of this variety is quite different from Black Cherry, not having such complex flavors. But it is a good sweet, medium/large cherry and very productive.

I've grown a variety of cherry tomatoes for mixed baskets at market and my favorites are sun sugar (like sun gold but not so prone to cracking, way more prolific, and customer's favorite), black cherry (but waaaait for them to fully ripen), green grape, ildi, and Supersweet 100s.

Varieties tried but no longer grown because they weren't as tasty as the above (in my soil) include Sweet Treats, Snow Whites, Lollipop (tasty & pretty but preferred Ildi), Chocolate Cherry, Juliet, Flamme's (!), Gardener's Delight, and Isis Candy.

    Have fun!

It's funny how conditions affect a tomato's flavor. Juliet is super prolific and keeps extremely well. But most of the time, I think it tastes like cardboard. However... I have discovered that when our temperatures go above the mid nineties its flavor improves greatly. Then, I don't mind eating it. But still, I'd vote Black Cherry any day.

I'm trying Carbon Copy this year.

Love, love, love the flavor of the Sungolds, but had to eat them as soon as they were picked because of the cracking. I thought that clipping them from the vine with the stem intact might prevent that, but most of them still cracked within a few minutes inside the house. I called them my " crack babies". Won't grow them again. I have had good luck with sweet million and Juliet. They just don't taste quite as good as the Sungolds.

If your sungolds are splitting, you are leaving then on the vine too long. We pick a little on the green side and rarely, if ever get any to crack and the flavor is just as good. We grow over 100 cherry tomato plants and at least 25 are always sungold.

Sungolds are a revered variety of tomatoes...but it is well-documented that they are prone to cracking.

+1 on Black Cherry... I get 10' tall BC's growing on a trellis with legendary productivity.

It's a real nice large cherry, but has a mild taste to it (IMHO).

    Some other good cherries are:

    Sweet Million
    Super Sweet 100
Dr. Carolyn's (citrus flavor; ping pong size)
    Blush
    Mountain Magic

My vote is for Chocolate Cherry. Dusky purple with a complex taste. Roasted slowly --- yum.

I grew Super Sweet 100 and Tami G last year, and they both did great. The Tami G was an extremely vigorous plant, but I think the Super Sweet 100 were tougher fruit and I don't recall a single one cracking.
