Cooktop Search

I have posted about my previous appliance purchases and received excellent feedback on this forum. I purchased 2 single Electrolux convection ovens, a Miele 863sci dishwasher and an LG counter depth french door refrigerator. I have a new Whirlpool Velos Microhood(the one appliance I am not really happy about).
I have been looking at induction cooktops for some time and am having a very difficult time making a decision. I want a cooktop with the stainless surround as I have seen several on display with chips on them when they don't have a surround. I I have looked at slide in ranges and they also have had chips out of the cooktops, so the surround is important to me. I know I will have to deal with curmbs gathering at the surround, but I can clean that, but cannot fix chips.
Options ar limited. The GE requires a great deal of clearance underneath and is the least expensive at 1600.00. The Miele is the one with the layout I like least and it seems to scratch the easiest. The Bosch only has the surround on the top and bottom, the Electrolux , at 1500.00 is reasonable in all categories but the Wolf is the one I like the most, but is the most expensive at 2100.00
I have read through threads on the induction used by members, but those of you who repair or service or sell these brands, what would you put in your own home?
If you have or have had any of them, would you purchase again? I have also been offered a Wolf electric cooktop on closeout for 1100.00,brand new display and with the warranty. The offer is intriguing...
Thanks again,
Gayle

I've had the Electrolux Icon cooktop for over 5 years now and it has been trouble free.

It has the trim around it and no chipping. The main reason I bought it was the touch controls were separated from the main cooktop by an SS strip. That was important to us, (at the time) because we had a very fancy conventional cooktop that lasted less than a year due to grease or whatever getting on the touch controls and disabling them or causing the touch controls to "do their own thing", (so to speak).

It turns out this was an unfounded fear on our part, as I can't recall a single post where anyone has had problems with the touch controls on any of the induction cooktops.

With the SS trim edge, (which was also used for ventilation) on the Elux model that I have, the cooktop sits "Proud of the countertop", (elevated above it a quarter inch or so) so we have not had any problems of it "Morphing into a crumb catcher".

Unfortunately the model I have has been discontinued, but I post just to let you know about the reliability of our particular Electrolux induction cook top.

GYle - is the Wolf floor model induction?

Yes, it is induction. The cooktops are brand new in appearance, with no flaws. My concern now is that the clearances on some might be too deep for a three drawer base cabinet. The dealer told me that the Wolf cooktops could be installed in such a base but after looking at the install manuals it appears that the cooktops require 6 inches clearance which eliminates the top drawer. I guess the Wolf are off the list now.
Bosch currently has a 200.00 rebate going on. That adds to the temptation of the Bosch now. I really do want and induction and feel like I am just going in circles over this decision..

Football - you are correct on the clearance on that model. I had to scurry to figure out a plan for items that were to be stored in the drawer. It worked fine in the end.

    a2gemini,
I found out aht the Wolf plain old electric cooktops also require 6 inches below the cooktop for clearance. I originally thought that possibly the clearance was just for the electrical outlet on the cooktop, but it appears that the entire cooktop needs that much clearance. The most shallow induction cooktop is the LG. I haven't been able to see one of those and I won't buy and appliance unseen.
I have given myself an appliance budget and am currently under my budget for all of the appliances, so I thought I would splurge on the cooktop if I found one out of my original cooktop budget that I really liked, but I am not willing to give up my top drawer, so I have settled on the Bosch. It will allow me to use the top drawer, it has a partial stainless surround, has good reviews and only requires a 30 amp circuit. It is currently on sale at several dealers and also has the 200.00 rebate, so Bosch it is.
BTW, I find it off-putting that the rebate is invalid at BB, Lowes and Sears.
Thinking of buying it online at Goedeckers or AJ Madison. Will try to see if any local dealers with price match.
    Thanks all for your input.

You can always get a fabricator to make an after-market edge guard for you and drop the cooktop into that. I can't imagine the cost would be very high, since you're really only looking for a little lip or a small overlap and this isn't about aesthetics, right?

Do you have a Pacific Sales near you? I got all my appliances there, and even though they're owned by Best Buy and the Bosch rebate wasn't available if you purchased at Best Buy, it WAS available for my purchase at Pacific Sales (and the prices I got were as good as anything I could put together online or elsewhere).

Thanks to all who responded. I have decided on a Bosch induction with the 30 inch size and stainless top and bottom. It seems to best suit my needs and budget. I really like the Wolf but don't want to give up any storage.
I do have a pacific sales and my son works for BB part time, so I could get the appliance there with an additional discount, but pacific sales outside of California are eliminated for many of the discounts offered. My Pacific Sales is in MD. They are having a lot of really good closeouts on floor model appliances right now.
They have a Bosch 500 series double wall oven for 1599.00, a Miele master chef double wall oven for 4000.00 and several others as well as several cooktops, fridges, ranges, ect, including several built-in and integrated fridges.
I just don't need what they have right now. Too bad though as some of the built in fridges are half off.
    Thanks again all,
P.S. My son is only part time at a different store, so I wan't pushing BB for him to make any sales. They also don't work on commission.

I have read good things about the Bosch - enjoy!

This isn't a good picture, but I wanted to show you the lack of scratches on the Bosch trim, which we have been using since December 2013.

    SJHockeyfan,
Thanks you so much for the picutre. I am really hoping to like the cooktop. I have been wanting to go induction since first reading about this years ago on this site. Do you like this cooktop? Would you but it again?
    TIA,

I would absolutely buy it again! For me and my cooking style, the burner layout is just right, I love direct-select power levels (I do think having to go tap-tap-tap would get old pretty quickly) and as I said, the individual hob timers are used at least daily. Love it. (And my pans are not fancy -- I bought the Tramontina All-clad, which is perfect for me for pots - one little IKEA 365+ just because I needed a 1-qt. pot, 2 large soup pots (Denmark), and for pans I use either a Lodge cast iron pan, a ceramic non-stick (Zwilling), two Kitchen Essentials non-sticks. I am not a fancy cook, in fact, I don't even love to cook. But since I have to, I do love doing it on my Bosch induction!

Thanks, SJHOCKYFAN. I am shopping for the best price now. I just missed a 200.00 rebate on them.
