Thank you both for responding. It wasn't like ketchup and yes it was like a tomato chutney, chunky and sweet. Not at all hot and I know it was not too spicey because as a child I was a fussy eater. I wish I could describe the flavor. I know I could have eaten it right out of the jar - it was that good.

I did find a recipe that uses green tomatoes but I remember the color of the sauce being red, not green, so I can only assume it was made with ripe tomatoes.

Sounds like it might be homemade chili sauce? It can be served on meatloaf or any other meat where you might add catsup. This recipe uses red bell peppers, so no green. You could chop the tomatoes, onions, and peppers as chunky as you remember them to be.

My grandmother always canned this. She also used it in baked beans for which she was known far and wide!

Lula Struthers Chili Sauce
(good on just about everything)

Chop the following:

3 hot peppers
3 sweet peppers
12 medium onions
2 small bunches of celery
1 peck peeled tomatoes

Chop all fine; add 1/2 cup salt, let stand overnight (no need to refrigerate); drain and discard juice.

Add:

1 T. each: cinnamon, cloves
ý T. allspice, and ginger
1-1/2 c. brown sugar
1-1/2 c. white sugar
2.5 c. apple cider vinegar

Bring to boil, then simmer one hour. (or until as thick as you wish) Water bath 10-15 minutes.

12 pints.
